Hank and Elizabethā¦
I think itās worth me putting this kind of explanation up every now and again.
I get asked, ābut what if they donāt want their picture taken?ā
Yes, what if?
What if I take someoneās photo and then show them and then they ask me to delete it? Well, then I delete it in front of them and no one gets hurt and the world carries on.
Then the opposite question needs to be asked⦠what if I didnāt take the photo at all and the people in my photos never have a chance to see them?
To me that is such a bigger sadnessā¦
Candid photography is such a unique part of life and without it a lot of moments in culture would be lost.
So many beautiful moments, I always think about the famous V Day photo in Times Square of the sailor kissing the girl. That moment would be lost to time without Candid photography.
This brings me back to Hank and Elizabeth⦠now I didnāt ask to take their photo, because if I did that moment would have been ruined. But when I showed them they were chuffed! And that made my day.
āThe moment would be ruinedā. I live by that when I am photographing. Donāt ruin the moment. Let it play out⦠just observe.
I often think about people 100 years from now looking at my photos like I look at photos from 100 years ago⦠in awe.
Thatās why I love being a photographer. My photos, my books, my prints will all outlive me and anyone who reads this post.
They will be in libraries forever and ever⦠and ever. I feel like my part in Melbourne is to document.
Iāve been doing it for almost 10 years now and would dare say I have taken more photos on the streets of Melbourne than anyone else.
A decade of Melbourne life. A decade of my life dedicated to it.
Anyway, thanks Hank and Elizabeth.
I look forward to seeing you In a Humans In Melbourne book soon and I hope you love knowing that 100 years from now there will be people seeing your photograph saying, āOh look, he is such a gentleman⦠and theyāre holding hands! I love them!ā
