UQ Art Museum A site for progressive and contemporary artistic inquiry.

The University of Queensland Art Collection is one of Queensland’s most significant public art collections. Developed over 70 years, it features more than 4,400 works of art, comprised predominantly of Australian artists from the colonial period to the present.

The Art Collection and the Art Museum’s creative program support and inform each other. The Art Collection speaks to the Art Museum’s d

istinct place within the University context and engages with practices and ideas central to research and learning in their many forms. Collection artworks are displayed in exhibitions, in the dedicated Collection Study Room, and in buildings across the University's campuses.

The Art Collection fosters new artistic inquiry, seeking out works of contemporary Australian art that articulate and complicate conditions present at the time of their making.

✨️ Old Words, Finding New Places: First languages in creative practices panel ✨️

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages sustain living connections to Country, lands, waters, skies and place across generations. The continuation and strengthening of first languages are vital for culture, identity and community, carrying knowledge forward for future generations.

Bringing together Indigenous peoples, including Elders and artists from diverse language groups and creative practices, this collective conversation celebrates and explores how old words are finding new places and resonance within contemporary Indigenous creative practices.

Join us for the first in a series of public conversations highlighting the embodiment, activation and renewed presence of First Nations languages, featuring:

📢 Join us for UQ Art Museum's four-part Speaker Series responding to core teachings in Indigenous Art History in the Australia Pacific Region

🌊 Across September and October, leading First Nations and Great Ocean artists and curators will join us on campus to speak to diverse themes in contemporary practice.

🎙️ Guest lecturers: Libby Harward, Jonathan Jones, Dr Kimberley Moulton, Aunty Sana Balai & Jocelyn Flynn will discuss topics including Urban Art Movements and Artist Collectives, Public and Site-Specific Art, Indigenous Perspectives on Curation, and Pacific Art and Global Conversations.

Developed in collaboration with Dominique Chen, Senior Lecturer, School of Communication and Arts, as part of UQ Art Museum’s ongoing engagement with artists, colleagues and students while the Museum relocates.

Join us for a fortnightly reading group in the lead up to "Reflective Motives: Two Days with the Climate Aware Creative Practices Network and UQ Art Museum". The reading group will focus on key texts by Elder, educator and philosopher Dr Aunty Mary Graham, who will be presenting the keynote conversation with Tristen Harwood at Reflective Motives in November.

The reading group is a chance to come together around key texts by Mary, including from her new book "Politics: Philosophical Ordering by Country", co-authored with Morgan Brigg (Thames & Hudson 2026). It is suitable for anyone interested in exploring ideas and strategies for responding to a socially and environmentally charged climate in the context of contemporary art.
