🌿 Poi Raupo 🌿

Experimenting with some Raupo, i wove an extra large poi Raupo after viewing a similarly sized poi at the Auckland museum archives. Adding some muka for a handle, and houhere adornments, I wanted to keep the Raupo as the feature. It's suprisingly strong, and very light.
Now to make a set!

🌿Cleaning Harakeke At The Park🌿

I've been busy hopping from town to town, wānanga to wānanga learning as much as I can. I thought it'd be good, now that I have some time, to touch base with one of my original kaupapa for my weaving. That is to normalise weaving, increase its visibility, and strengthen its place outside of the exhibition and "art" space. Don't get me wrong, I love to create work for the exhibition space, but I also enjoy the practical, accessible, and communal aspect of weaving.

Here's some of my cousin's on the way back from the park where I was harvesting, posing with their bridge/shelter. They'd come down to play in the park and ended up doing some weaving. I didn't instruct them or teach them, they just wanted to join in and had absorbed so much without me even noticing!

For me, this is why we, as weavers, need to be visible. If we want our craft to survive, grow, and thrive we need to share our time with whanau, and others, to support and spark their interest.

🌿 Prepping some new pokinikini today ready for the boil. It peaceful hearing the sound of them clattering together and the act of swinging them around. They'll be added to the collection for a Pihepihe I'm weaving. Or maybe for some Ipu Kōrero.

🌿 Construction of the kilt 🌿

A construction post of some of the steps involved with weaving this "kilt". It's actually a single piece of woven whāriki, 5.5m in length. It's woven out of thin whenu so that it is more pliable. None of it was sewn or tied/knotted; all the pleats and finishes were woven in using whāriki techniques. It sits unlike a proper kilt on this manniquinn as the kilt is made for a waist size of 48 inches, while this manniquinn is only 36 inches. The overlapping of the pleats was a styling choice to account for the different size.

🌿Bachelor's in Toi Maori 🌿
All through this year I've been very absent as I've been studying and completing my final year in my bachelor's in Māori art, focused on raranga. It's been a pretty hectic year, flying back and forwards between NZ and Brisbane. My weaving was only able to be done in NZ as well as it was too large and too risky to travel through customs with.

This is the culmination of this year's learning. A fusion of my Māori and Scottish whakapapa, creating a Scottish inspired outfit using only Māori materials and techniques, focussing on whāriki techniques.
The ensemble consists of a Kilt, Tātua, Muka kete - inspired by a sporran, Kuta Sash - inspired by the Plaid, and combination of a Maori Aurei and Scottish penannular.

Behind is an 11m Tāmata, patterned with Poutama, emulating a heraldic banner and the similarities between both.

I'll release some more in-depth posts about each piece.

This wouldn't have been possible without the help of many people out there, to list a few:
and everyone at Orakei

Te Hemo ata Henare
Lorraine King
The rest of my cohort at

A huge thank you to and family. Without them I wouldn't have been housed, fed, supported, and driven across the country and to the many resources I needed.
And to the secret carver (that doesn't want to be named), thank you for materialising my image with your skills.
