So apparently, I’ve got some direct competition.

Am I angry? Actually… no.

A new creative business has opened in my suburb offering similar workshops for a similar audience, and quite a few of you have messaged me saying, “Karen, you must be furious!”

Honestly? I’m not.

The world is full of businesses doing similar things. We’re all trying to make a living, and if another artist wants to create a space where people can make art, connect and get creative, then I genuinely wish her every success. There is room for all of us.

More creativity in the world can only be a good thing.

Of course, when my business is called U Create, and the new business in the same suburb is called something so similar…is perhaps a little unexpected.

The similarity is perhaps a little unexpected.

I’ve been building U Create for over 10 years, so naturally people are going to make the connection — and judging by my inbox, you already have!

But competition doesn’t scare me. I’m proud of what we do, the community we’ve built and everything that makes U Create special.

I believe there’s space for more creative businesses, more opportunities to make art and more places for people to feel inspired and connected.

So rather than getting angry, I thought I’d open the conversation.

Where do YOU think inspiration ends and direct competition begins?

Because I reckon this could be an interesting one….I would love to hear your thoughts?

Well, this felt like a BIG milestone.

My first proper filming day in The Nook.

Four hours. Five films. A fair few retakes because apparently I can’t stop talking, I waffle, I lose my words and occasionally have to start the whole bloody thing again.

But it felt SO good.

After nearly a year of planning, building, buying equipment, learning, testing and slowly creating this little corner of my studio, I could finally just walk in, switch the lights on, plug everything in and GO.

And I think that’s when it hit me.

This is the start.

Not preparing to start. Not talking about starting. Actually starting.

Now I’ve got five films heading to the editing table to be chopped, mashed and turned into something I can finally share with you.

I’m excited. I’m pumped. And I genuinely cannot wait to see where The Nook goes from here.

So here you go…

Four hours of filming in ten seconds.

Daisy kept telling me she had a little surprise planned for when I hit 15,000 followers.

And I kept saying, “Yeah, yeah… we’re way off that yet.”

Well… apparently not!

Today this arrived from Snapfish and LOOK AT IT. She’s made me a heat-reveal 15K mug. I mean, how cute is that?!

What a day. 15,000 of you lovely people following my little corner of creativity AND the slime reel has just gone past HALF A MILLION views.

Half a million. What is going on?!

I’ve genuinely got a smile from ear to ear. Humbled, grateful and actually just ridiculously happy.

Thank you to every single one of you who watches, comments, shares, sends me messages and follows along with my slightly bonkers creative world.

And Daisy… you gorgeous thing. Thank you. This is going to make me giggle every single time I have a cup of tea.

What a bloody lovely day.

Throwback Thursday, and this one is a little shout-out to my family.

U Create might be a sole-owned business, but it has definitely always been a family effort.

Over the years, my family have never thought twice about jumping in to help. Whether it’s painting, building, fixing things, prepping for classes, helping in the studio, moving things around, or all the behind-the-scenes IT that keeps everything running online — there’s always been someone willing to lend a hand.

And a special thank you to David, because without all your behind-the-scenes IT help, a lot of what happens online simply wouldn’t happen!

I honestly wouldn’t be where I am today without them. Building a business can be a lot, and having people around you who believe in you and are willing to help along the way is pretty special.

So this Throwback Thursday is for my family. Thank you for everything you’ve done, and continue to do, to help make U Create what it is.

Happy Throwback Thursday!

15,000. FIFTEEN THOUSAND.

And it happened LIVE 8.30am this morning during Sketchtember Day 10.

Honestly, I was like a little kid. Excited, embarrassed, overwhelmed, humbled… all of it.

It feels like five minutes ago I was celebrating 3,000, then 4,000, and now somehow there are 15,000 of you following along with my little crazy corner of creativity.

And that means so much more to me than just a number.

It means the art hacks, the tips, the tricks and all those things I’ve picked up over 20+ years of teaching and running a creative business are actually useful to you.

Half the time I take this stuff for granted because it’s just sitting in my head.

Well, blimey. Unpack my brain and I’ll share the bloody lot.

Because that’s what this is about for me. Sharing creativity. Sharing what I know. Making art feel accessible. Spreading a bit of joy. And banging the drum VERY loudly for the enormous part creativity can play in our mental health and wellbeing.

So, 15,000 of you.

Thank you.

Please never think I take for granted the fact that you give up a little bit of your day to watch me teach, paint, make things, waffle, experiment, occasionally c**k things up and generally share my slightly bonkers creative world.

I am deeply, deeply appreciative.

And there is SO much more to come.

If there’s something you want me to share, teach, demonstrate or explain, DM me. I’m an open book.

15,000.

Wow.

This is the moment.

A little shout-out and a very big THANK YOU to Brisbane Business Hub and Lord Mayor Schrinner.

Back in 2025, I was lucky enough to receive a Women in Business Grant, and as I film the first episode of The Nook podcast, I wanted to show you exactly where the money went.

Every dollar funded the technology needed to make this happen: the mixing desk, cameras, lighting, tripods, cabling and all those boring-but-necessary bits nobody sees but every podcast needs.

Nearly a year later, I’ve turned a corner of my art studio into The Nook, and the podcast is finally launching. It feels like a full-circle moment, especially with applications for the next round of the Women in Business Grant now open.

If you’re a woman running a small business in Brisbane with an idea you’d love to bring to life, applications close on 6 October.

You don’t have to navigate the process alone. Brisbane Business Hub offers grant-writing workshops, seminars and resources to help guide you through it.

For me, the grant provided more than financial support. It also brought learning, business education, valuable connections and membership of the Women in Business alumni community. It helped turn a slightly chaotic idea into something real.

So thank you to everyone involved for backing small businesses and giving women the opportunity to run with their next big idea.

If you’re thinking about applying — DO IT. And if you have questions about my experience, feel free to reach out.

Now… I’ve just filmed the first episode so off to edit the podcast.

One week of Sketchtember DONE!

30 days, 30 sketches and we’re already one week in. I thought it was time for a little online gallery of some of the amazing work you’ve all been creating so far.

I absolutely love seeing everyone’s different takes on the prompts. Same prompt, completely different ideas, styles and interpretations — and honestly, they’re all looking so good!

If you haven’t started yet, don’t worry! You can jump in whenever you like. You definitely don’t have to go back and start from Day 1. We’re up to Day 8, so come join us and get sketching.

We’ll be doing a little recap like this each week, so keep sending your sketches through and you might see yours featured!

Shout out to everyone who has participated along with and Jessa who I can’t tag in the photos but have made wonderful art as well!

Which one is your favourite from this week?
