Vale, Maroochy Barambah.

Maroochy was a revered Turrbal Elder, traditional Songwoman and Law-woman, trailblazer, and matriarch whose work carried culture from Queensland to national and international stages.

Born on Cherbourg Aboriginal Reserve, Maroochy held Turrbal and Gubbi Gubbi ancestry ties with bloodline connections to Wakka Wakka, Gamilaroi and Birri Gubba nations.

Her passion for the arts led her to study at the Melba Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne and the Victorian College of the Arts, where she graduated in Dramatic Arts. In 1989, Maroochy made history as the first Aboriginal person to perform on the Australian operatic stage, taking on the lead role in 'Black River'.

In 1993, she broke new ground again, becoming the first Australian to perform at the United Nations in New York in honour of the International Year for the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

A stalwart of cultural celebration in Queensland, Maroochy was a beloved and enduring presence, sharing her iconic Welcome to Country at events such as the Australian Women in Music Awards, WOW Australia, BIGSOUND, and many more.

Her legacy as a cultural custodian, artist and leader will continue to inspire generations of women and girls.
