Join us in the Theatrette for a short pre‑concert talk with Stage Director, Tarita Botsman.

An award‑winning soprano, director and creator with an international career spanning opera, theatre and music theatre, Tarita will share insights into her contemporary reimagining of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas.

This is a great way to enrich your experience before the performance. All audience members welcome!

Henry Purcell’s opera, Dido and Aeneas, is one of the earliest and most influential English Baroque operas to date. Written in the late 1680s, it draws its central story from Book IV of Virgil's Aeneid, which recounts the tragic story of Dido the Queen of Carthage and the Trojan, Aeneas.

Our adaptation of Purcell’s opera will explore the iconic love story in a dystopian digital empire where citizens are controlled and categorised.

1. You don’t have to dress up
2. Arrive 20-30 minutes early
3. We will have a preconcert talk – more details to come
4. Our production runs for 75 minutes so there won’t be an interval
5. Hold your applause for the end.

Choreography is beginning to take shape for our modern reimagining of Henry Purcell's Baroque opera, Dido and Aeneas. This opera is a collaboration between our choir, independent soloists and an excellent team who are assisting in its production. 💃 COSTUME TEASER! 💃 Here is an exclusive preview of our costume design concepts for Dido and Aeneas.

Dido and Aeneas is being developed in collaboration with the talented director, writer and opera singer, Tarita Botsman. Tarita is a fiercely independent, hybrid artist whose career spans opera, music theatre, directing, writing, composing, producing, curating and arts leadership. Outside of her role as Stage Director, Tarita created inspiring costume designs using materials and clothes from her costume store. They speak to notions of futurism, state power and control – themes that will be explored in our modern adaptation.

🎭 DIDO AND AENEAS IS COMING! 🎭

Join us in The Dron Auditorium for an immersive modern reimagining of Henry Purcell’s iconic opera, Dido and Aeneas. This production is directed by opera singer, writer and director, Tarita Botsman, and Brisbane based conductor, Kathryn Morton, and will showcase the dynamic nature of our Lumen’s Chamber Choir as they sing in this drama-filled story about love, power and control.
