A moment from Song for a New World: Florence Price's Resignation.

Price was the first Black woman to have her music performed by a major American orchestra, and her work has become an important part of American classical music. Resignation captures something of the weight and complexity of her writing - intimate, restrained, and quietly powerful.

A note from our founders, Eleanor & Tom about this beautiful and melancholy program:

We are thrilled to welcome back guest director Dominic
Fitzgerald for Song for a New World. He is a familiar face to
OEM having produced our album, Eternity, last year as well as
several new recordings (currently in the works) - he is a
musical mind, and set of ears that we trust enormously and
have much to learn from. Many of you will remember Dominic
from a previous concert in Sacred Heart in November of 2024
where we performed Bach’s Komm, Jesu, Komm and Britten’s
A Boy was Born - the energy, passion and knowledge he
brought us was wonderfully beneficial for our ensemble
sound, forcing us to respond and use our voices in new ways.
It is also a rare treat to have Tom singing in the ensemble -
after 5 years working on his voice at the Queensland
Conservatorium, it’s almost ironic that he only rarely gets to
sing in the ensemble.

In Dominic’s own words, this program is unapologetically sad
and plumbs the depth of the darker parts of psychology which
have brought about a most incredible repertory of American
choral works written in the last 100 years. If you came for the
Barber Adagio (which is popular for good reason!) We hope
you leave this concert with many more “hidden gem” works
that make their way to your favourites list.

✨3 days until Song for a New World✨

It is wonderful to be back in the rehearsal room with our guest director, Dominic Fitzgerald for Song for a New World. Many of you will remember Dominic from a previous concert in Sacred Heart in November of 2024 where we performed Bach’s Komm, Jesu, Komm and Britten’s A Boy was Born ✨

Dominic enjoys a busy musical life, splitting his time between teaching, conducting, singing and playing the cello. As Assistant Head of Department – The Arts at Brisbane Boys’ College and Casual Academic at the University of Queensland’s School of Music, Dominic works with students of all stages in their music education journey, from Primary to Tertiary. Cello Performance was the focus of his Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees, at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University and the Sydney Conservatorium, University of Sydney, respectively. Since 2015, Dominic has developed a keen interest in choral music and classical singing generally - and worked as a Lay Clerk at St. John’s Anglican Cathedral in Brisbane from 2015 until May of 2023 when he accepted the position of Director of Music for Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Fortitude Valley. He conducts and sings in choirs in a variety of contexts. Dominic is a great enthusiast for the canon of Western Art Music, as well as a vast array of contemporary and ancient music.

✨4 days until Song for a New World ✨

Female composer spotlights:

Florence Price (1887–1953) – Resignation
Florence Price was the first Black American woman to have a work performed by a major American orchestra, when the Chicago Symphony played her Symphony in E minor in 1933. Much of her enormous output was lost for decades; a cache of manuscripts found in an abandoned Illinois house in 2009 has driven the revival now underway.
Resignation sets Price’s own words, composed likely in her final years as a direct response to a lifetime of compounding trauma: escaping domestic abuse, enduring systemic racism that stifled her career, and battling the chronic pain and poverty that marked her later life. Though not an arrangement of an existing spiritual, it carries the genre’s hallmarks – the six-note minor scale, the plain declamation, the weight of accumulated grief. It is a raw, autobiographical farewell where the composer surrenders her earthly struggles to God.

Caroline Shaw (b. 1982) – and the swallow
Caroline Shaw was the youngest composer ever to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, awarded in 2013 for Partita for 8 Voices, and is very likely the only choral composer with a Kanye West collaboration on her CV. Her writing is known for extended vocal techniques, one of which surfaces at the close of “and the swallow” where the singers mimic the sound of falling autumn rain by singing long notes on a repeated “n”. Shaw has said the Syrian refugee crisis was on her mind as she wrote the word, describing Psalm 84’s sparrow and swallow sheltering their young as “a beautiful image of a bird trying to keep her children safe” - people, in other words, trying to keep their families safe.
