I'm a lifelong student of photography, always learning and pushing the boundaries of style and creativity. The creation of an image is an intimate and deeply personal experience. It's this experience and passion that I bring to my photo shoots. From an early age I have viewed the world through the lens of my mind. The catch lights in the eyes of a child, the spray off the waves during a winter sto

rm, the solitude and peacefulness of an autumn dawn...these all touch my soul and inspire me emotionally to forever chase that ever elusive perfect image. Among my favourite photographers, the stand out is Giuseppe Leone. Renowned for his ability to capture the everyday lives of Sicilians from all generations, walks of life and social hierarchies, Giuseppe Leone is in touch with the pulse of a country steeped in a turbulent history and uncertain future. “Leo is a narrator of Sicily, its monuments, its festivals, customs and life.”

NGC6188 The Fighting Dragons of Ara
Located about 4000 light years from Earth, NGC6188 is an emission nebula in the constellation Ara. Rotating the image reveals two dragons facing each other. The small nebula at the bottom of the image is NGC6164, popularly known as the Dragon's Egg due to its proximity to the larger nebula complex.
Pushed more technical boundaries last night by going out to 300 second exposures. My polar alignment was 0.08 arc seconds of error which is pretty damn good, but again I struggled with auto guiding. Not sure what was going on but I was surprised the image came out better than I expected.

M83, also known as the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy, is a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Hydra, about 15 million light-years from Earth. In April 2025 it was published that first clues were found for the possible existence of a supermassive black hole at the center of this galaxy.

That's more like it!
My second attempt on this target and a much better result. Over two nights I was able to get just over 8 hours of data, compared to just under 2 hours the first time...clouds! Also, I decided to go without a filter as I'm in Bortle 3 skies and light pollution is negligible. I did struggle with guiding a little, but that's a learning curve with a longer focal length.

The Carina Nebula - NGC 3372
A large, complex area of bright and dark nebulosity in the constellation Carina, located in the Carina–Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. This nebula is approximately 8,500 light-years from Earth and is one of the largest diffuse nebulae in our skies. It is considered a southern sky target and in the southern hemisphere we have the best seat in the house to view it.

Another beautiful, crystal clear NQ night, so I decided to push some boundaries. After setting up the rig just before Astronomical Twilight (7:54pm AEST) and making sure everything was running properly I spent an hour surveying the night sky with binoculars. I then headed off to bed with an alarm set for midnight, just before the automatic meridian flip. These can be tricky as the cables can easily get snagged while the mount resets itself. The flip went without a hitch and after it auto recalibrated the guiding, it continued taking images. Back to bed with the alarm set for 3am, in time to finish off the session. Again, the rig did its job with an auto home position reset and shut down. This is the most data I've collected in one session, 7.5 hours and I'm really happy with the final image.

Two for the price of one...
The Horsehead Nebula and the Flame Nebula
Approximately 1375 light years from Earth, these nebulae are located just to the south of Alnitak (the bright star centre right), the easternmost star of Orion's Belt, and is part of the much larger Orion molecular cloud complex.
Clear, cloudless nights are rare this time of year in the tropics, so I make the most of them when they happen....even if it is a "school" night. This image was a tough one to process. Alnitak is so hard to edit and ends up being a bright blob with a halo.

The Orion Nebula (also known as Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976) is a diffuse nebula situated in the Milky Way, part of Orion's Belt in the constellation of Orion and is known as the middle "star" in the "sword" of Orion. It is one of the brightest nebulae and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. It is approx 1,400 light years away and is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth.

New location and new rig.
First light on the ZWO AM5n tracking mount and the William Optics Redcat 61 telescope. I was pleasantly surprised how everything worked so effortlessly, considering my gear has been in storage since July. The clouds rolled in at around midnight so I had to cut my session short. Lots of room for improvement but I'm pretty happy with the initial results. I no longer have to drive a 3 hour round trip to get to dark skies as my new backyard is Bortle 3 class. A short 15 minute drive and I can be in Bortle 2 class.

Third Time Lucky...
Yesterday evening low clouds on the western horizon spoiled the comet party so instead I re-shot the Carina Nebula. Everything worked so well right from the start, polar aligned within 3 minutes, guiding went smoothly all night and the clouds rolled in at 11:30pm as forecast. I was able to get 3.7 hours of data. This is my third attempt at this Nebula and finally I have an image that I'm happy(ish) to show.
NGC3372 - The Great Carina Nebula.
A large, complex area of both bright & dark nebulosity, it's about 8,500 light years from Earth. It was discovered by Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille in 1752 from the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.

Last minute decision to change location and head out west, and I wasn't disappointed. By the time I arrived it was after 7:30pm and I had to set up in the dark. It turned out to be a stunning, clear night.
Image 1:
I managed to get some pretty good guiding figures but somehow the nebula image didn't turn out as good as I'd hoped......
As always, my back up plan was the Milky Way.

I've shot this nebula a few times and I have struggled with getting sharp images. I guess I'll have to keep practicing.

335 photos, each 35 second exposures (total 3.25 hours). The stars appear to "rotate" around a point in the sky. In fact, it's a visual representation of the Earth's rotation around the south celestial pole.

Emu Rising.
Hello old friend. The Milky Way is back in our southern skies. The Rising Emu as described in Indigenous culture, can be seen in the eastern sky from about 8pm. It's "eye" is highlighted by reddish nebulosity.

Triple Treat....

1. The Horsehead Nebula - IC434 (top middle)
A dark nebula approximately 1375 light years from Earth. Found in the Orion Constellation, it's identifiable by it's shape - a horse's head.
2. Alnitak - Aa (bright star, middle)
Is a hot, blue supergiant star, being one of the three stars making up Orion's Belt. Found, obviously, in the Orion Constellation.
3. The Flame Nebula - NGC2024 (Lower middle)
Is an emission nebula about 1350 light years away and found in the Orion Constellation.

Finally a clear night, the first since early Feb! As we move further into autumn, and closer to winter, the weather should hopefully become more stable with the majority of nights being clear and crisp 🤞 Last night definitely had a chill to it, so soon I'll be out at Watts Bridge again with my friends, the stampeding cows.
