In the month leading up to the Iris Awards in New Zealand, Matt and I also judged several categories of the Australian Photographic Prize.

Now in its fourth year, the Australian Photographic Prize has a strong mission to:
- Educate through constructive feedback, transparent judging and the sharing of world-class work.
- Build Community by connecting photographers at every stage of their journey, from emerging creatives to seasoned professionals.
- Celebrate Amazing Photography by recognising and showcasing outstanding imagery that inspires us all.

It is a competition that is open to ALL photographers - Aussie and International - whether professional, enthusiast, semi-pro or otherwise. Their emphasis on education is really evident in the judging, whereby entrants can pay a little extra and receive quality written feedback, and also in the Top 30 judging which can be watched / listened to on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com//streams

It was a pleasure to be part of the judging again this year, and we also picked up a few awards along the way!

Wow - what an incredible week we had in New Zealand for the NZIPP - the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography Iris Awards and Photo Show! It was so wonderful to catch up with everyone - we definitely felt the love! We spent three days judging, and during that time (while we were in different rooms), 22 of our prints were judged too. We're absolutely over-the-moon with our results!! Then we both stood on stage (twice) over the next two days to share some thoughts about photography (and life) which was really special.

The big news is that Matt achieved his Grand Master distinction (whoo hoo!!!) and received four Gold Awards on his way to winning Australian Travel Photographer of the Year.... and OVERALL AUSTRALIAN PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR!! You'd better believe that I (Mieke) leapt out of my chair and was jumping up and down with excitement, even though I would've also been thrilled if either of the other two Finalists (Belinda Richards and Adam Hourigan) had've been named, as they're both such awesome people and mind-blowingly amazing photographers!

I (Mieke) received 7 Silver Distinction awards and 4 Silver Awards for my entries (which was awesome!!) and I was absolutely thrilled that all 22 of our prints ended up with Awards! I didn't receive a Gold award this year, so I was very very surprised when I was named a Finalist in the Landscape category, and even more stunned when they read out my name at the Gala Dinner as the winner! The other Finalists were our good friend Chris Saunders and Julie Kenny and their work is so stunning, so I definitely didn't think it was going to be me. I'm both amazed and humbled. It was a crazy night!

We'd like to say a HUGE thank you to the overall sponsor of the Iris Awards - Canon New Zealand - and the sponsors of our categories - Ilford Imaging, CRK NZ Photo and Canon New Zealand!! The Iris Awards couldn't happen without their generous support, and we are so very grateful for this annual event!

And finally, thank you so much to the NZIPP - the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography. The amount of work that goes into it is absolutely insane, and much of the work is voluntary, and done with generosity and care for a greater good. From print handlers to tech support, the Board and the Honours Committee, the Panel Chairs, judges and assistants - everyone just steps up. You just don't see much of that these days. It is a remarkable organisation, and I'm so proud to be part of it!

THANK YOU NZIPP!

And thank you to all of you who have supported us along the way - whether you popped in and had a chat about our work, bought a calendar, or bought a large piece of artwork for your walls: it means that we can do what we love. And for that, you have our eternal gratitude!!!

"Cathedral of Ice"

Matt's story: The Cathedral stands grandly above the horizon at Tubberlungener / Mount Buffalo. On such a cold morning, the foliage and giant granite tor is covered spectacularly in ice.

From both of us: Just a reminder that we're open today and tomorrow, but we will be closed from Sunday 2nd until Thursday the 13th, because we'll be judging the NZ Professional Photography Awards (the Iris Awards) in Christchurch, and then presenting at the New Zealand Photo Show.

We'll be back on deck on Thursday, August 13th.

We're OPEN today!!
And tomorrow!
And on Saturday!

"A Foggy Country Road"

Mieke's story; I love chasing the fog. I love going to sleep the night before having seen that there's a forecast for local fog, and then waking up with the hope that the fog will be floating in a photogenic location. I love just driving around, looking... looking... looking. Sometimes I come home without one photo. Sometimes I come home with a full memory card! It all depends on the weather and how it's interacting with the trees and hills and valleys, and how long it sticks around for. No two fog-chasing days are the same. Every time it's different.

I'd never noticed this driveway before, but this particular morning, it absolutely stopped me in my tracks. What a beautiful scene. It was completely transformed from ordinary to extraordinary by the fog. I was buzzing with happiness!

"Stoic"

Mieke's story: Matt's "Icelandic Echoes" book project took us to many old and abandoned buildings all around Iceland. Of course, I wasn't about to stand around and just watch when they were so incredibly photogenic! There are a surprising number of these abandoned farm houses there, and I don't know all the reasons that they've been abandoned, but I imagine the difficulty of farming in these windy, snow-prone, isolated places simply became too much for many farmers. The average wind speed in Winter is 23km/hr, but sustained gale-force winds of an almost-unbelievable 225km/hr have also been recorded. And then, of course, there's constant volcanic activity and earthquakes which can make whole regions of Iceland uninhabitable. These sturdy homes were clearly built to last though, and they are in such atmospheric places. I can only imagine the stories they'd tell if they could...

"The Alpen Glow at Buffalo"

A magical morning up at the Cathedral (Tubberlungener / Mount Buffalo) back in June 2025. It was so cold!

We have "The Alpen Glow at Buffalo" as a large float-framed canvas hanging in the front window of the Gallery as part of our Winter Showcase. We're open 10am-4pm every day except Wednesdays, at 102a Gavan Street in Bright (across the road from the Cinema / Visitor's Centre / Brewery). Browsing is free and welcomed!

"Road to Mývatn"

Matt's story: It was a relief to reach the clear skies of Mývatn on this day, as we had been chased across the frozen North-East of Iceland by a st******nt. This road near the Namafjall geothermal area feels like the entry point to Mývatn and a safety blanket as one approaches civilisation. During Winter, these roads are crusted with ice, and as it was in this instance, may be completely obscured by intense snow and low cloud. It wasn't possible to spend too long outside the vehicle, as temperatures were minus 25 degrees Celsius, causing my nose to bleed and then the blood to freeze! It was worth it to see the harsh beauty of this place.

Just a reminder that tonight is the night!

As part of the , Matt and I will be staying back late at the Gallery to welcome visitors and locals alike to view our Winter Showcase. We'll be joining a stack of local businesses who are trading late tonight and we hope you can join in the celebration!

We're open from 10am - 4pm as per normal, and then we'll be open from 4:30pm until 7pm for this special event. (I know some of our posters say 6pm, but there was a bit of a mix-up with the Festival Planning Committee so we're now open til 7pm!)
