I’ve had a run of very frustrating days, where it feels like all I’ve managed to do is wreck some promising pieces.

Here are two I started last week and haven’t ruined. Not yet anyway.

Perhaps that will be tomorrow’s achievement!

Watching paint dry.
One of the many cool things about working with earth pigments and soy milk is that you can hang your paintings out to dry. The unfortunate flip side is that you can’t work in cold, wet weather because the soy can go off before the cloth has a chance to dry.

It took me ages to start stitching. It felt intimidating, like I ought to be able to embroider first. But then I realised that I don’t want to embroider, I want to stitch - freely and messily! I’ve even ended up having to redo sections that were too neat and constrained for my liking.

I thought I’d get bored but I was wrong.

I started playing around with earth pigments and soy milk a few months ago. Soy milk does not behave like any other paint binder that I’ve previously used and the first few weeks were incredibly frustrating as I tried to figure out its peculiarities.

I could probably have got there a lot quicker if I were guided by science rather than driven by impulse. I try to be methodical but then I think, I wonder what will happen if I do this and this…? Next thing I know I get an exciting (for me) result with very little clue as to how I got there.
