We are a not for profit artist run initiative based in B Block Hall of Gorman Arts Centre, Braddon. We aim to support artists, writers and curators at all career stages and to contribute to the development of our local and national arts conversation.

As a result of the impending climatic disturbance many young people are left feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and unsure about what the future holds. Homies for the Planet Earth (HoPE) is an exhibition that aims to capture the generational psyche of contemporary youth on climate change, and all of its multifaceted impacts on not only the environment but also on our lives.

Soft Launch is the amalgamation of works by the recipients of the Tributary Project’s Emerging Artists Award Scheme. The exhibiting artists with this exhibition demonstrates the forefront of emerging contemporary art within the ACT.

Join us as we celebrate their ingenuity and success as we “soft launch” them into the Canberra art scene.

A massive thank you to our award recipients, and collaborators; the Australian National University, Canberra Institute of Technology, Ainslie and Gorman, and all those who have aided both the artists and our organisation along the way.

Fold 4 is part of a series of small works which continue Al Munro’s investigation of the interaction of colour, pattern and space in painting. The fold-like corrugations in the painting’s physical structure disturb and activate the surface. As the viewer moves around each work, areas of pattern are either revealed or hidden, allowing the experience of the pattern, colours and forms to change according to the viewer’s position. This activates the viewer’s experience of the space and time of the painted surface.

The folded structure stems from Al's ongoing interest in the 'geometries' of textile materials and techniques. As pliable, foldable surfaces, textiles allow the deformation of the plane - 2D can become 3D. Textile grids can stretch and fold and twist, and the 'pleated' surface of the Fold painting series explores how an irregular folded surface can stretch and change the viewer's experience of pattern.

Through this artwork I set out to create a visual representation of a view into a mind. Different thought processes interact and bounce off each other in a chaotic yet harmonious manner. While not a representation of the mind in all its entirety it allows us to view just a fragment or window into the mind.

"Next Best Step (1)" is part of a series which reflects on my connection with local nature reserves, and explores the profound impact they have on my well-being. This connection became especially significant during the turbulent and uncertain times of the Covid era, and continues still. Immersing myself in these landscapes gives me space to self-reflect, decompress and feel grounded. On my walks, I take photographs; capturing moments in time and space which can never be recreated as they continually evolve day to day, season to season. I am particularly drawn to the transient nature of sunsets which are incredibly painterly in their colours and patterns. I use these photos to create multi-layered, mixed media works; interweaving the chaos of highly-charged, geometric colours, with atmospheric ‘breathing space’ created by photo transfers. The works undergo several iterations of construction and deconstruction until all elements have found their place within the layered composition. This methodology allows me to be present and engaged in the art-making process, emulating the mindfulness I experience when connecting with nature.

I often make paintings through stages. Attaching (gluing) fragments of paper or corrugated cardboard onto a piece of wood or canvas. Painting over the entire surface with thin acrylic washes altered by any number of mediums. Sometimes, I paint areas thickly in house paint or acrylic paint, likely to be peeled off at a later stage. Over time, a work may undergo many additions, subtractions, and obscurations, leaving traces of past ideas. This painting I made in 2020, at some point in the blur of that year's events, used this process. It holds onto the outlines of previous compositions, the shape of old ideas, and bits of paper that grip desperately to the wood. In some ways it makes me think of dreams, both those that occur during sleep and ideas I have held about the world since childhood that I refuse to let go of.

The twisted figure symbolises confusion and acceptance of the unknown experienced by the artist during this period, as he is flung into a new state of artistic freedom of his own creation.

Mimi Fairall is a multi-disciplinary artist who primarily works from Sydney, Canberra and the South Coast of NSW, Australia. Her work is a fluid and process-based practice centred around drawing, painting, printmaking, installation and murals. She also facilitates and participates in collaborative community projects, workshops and assisting established street artists with large scale works. Vibrant and playful, Mimi's compositions are made up of organic shapes, gestural marks and fields of competing colour. She oscillates between figuration and abstraction, emphasising spontaneity over detailed representation. Her cheerful, childlike works are testaments to her ongoing experimentations with materials and surface texture. Each piece is informed by sensory experiences from her everyday life - interesting textures, lights, smells, patterns or sounds. Her observations generate an intuitive and uninhibited response that led into her making process, free of expectation or desire for a specific outcome.

The work explores my relationship with the familial and cultural histories of women’s textile-based practices. Animating the well-used pillowcase gifted by my mother, the watery paint marks seek to bring out the history of the material and are responded to by free form cross stitches. Reversing the pillowcase corresponds with my intention to subvert the skill associated with needlework, thereby rejecting patriarchal expectations. My role is that of a balancing act between the past and present, bringing the intergenerational presence and craft into the artwork that challenges gendered hierarchy of art materials.

In this work, I explore the dissolution of the human into the environment. The work dwells conceptually in the w**d pile, which I see as a place of both dissolution and creative transformation, complicating and undermining notions of separateness from others. In this way, even as the text is revealed, the tension between understanding and dissolving is maintained. Ultimately the work asks, what new possibilities might come from embracing this notion of mixture.

First to put my hand up as a chocoholic!
Whilst looking and drooling over a particular seductive morsel, I found myself becoming fascinated by the engaging detail and patterning created by the ingredients within. Normally, they would disappear into the mouth as fast as the movement allowed, but this time it led to being entranced by another of the senses, the visual. Not just the marketing portrayal, but the actual creation of texture, colour and movement generated by the blending of the ingredients. This in turn reminded me so much of the patterning we see in nature, which has frequently, for me, led to the inception of a painting.

William Herbert' belongs to a series of etchings exploring Canberra’s iconic Brutalist architecture. Named after the streets each building is located on, the prints are made with aquatint uncovering the decaying concrete and structures that continue to stand in the ever-changing landscape of the capital.

Inside one's self is an exploration of identity. The hand is a reflection on my q***r identity and the writing a reflection of heritage. The text is an Ocean Vuong poem called “Someday I’ll love Ocean Vuong”, it resonated with me in the ideas of disconnection from heritage, my mother's not having passed on the language her mother's tongue to me. I placed the poem, originally in English, into google translate so it’s illegible to all reading it.

Before Dawn draws from myriad cultural and spiritual connections to the artist’s ancestral homeland of mainland China. Her practice uses intricate installations of fine porcelain self-reflectively to explore deeply personal meditations on renewal, the natural cycles of life, and the passage of time. Speaking in the universal language of flowers, the artist’s works act as chimerical microcosms of organic forms that are simultaneously autobiographical and contemplative of the ephemerality of the human condition. Building on this fascination, Li draws inspiration from the language of dreams, of myths and of utopias to examine cultural confluences.

Watercolour, pen, chain, fabric, paper, 30 X 44cm

This artwork is an invitation to contemplate your personal and family history of migration. What does the water taste like where you’re from? What temperature do you feel most at home in? My ancestors made shrines to honour the spirits that lived in their homes. These shrines would feed and nourish the spirits, who would keep you safe in return. This artwork explores what that tradition looks like when carried across the ocean to so-called ‘Australia’.
