Box Hill Academy Brass

Box Hill Academy Brass Box Hill Academy of Brass is a brass band program for beginner to advanced brass and percussion students aged 6+.

We are proud 2024 & 2025 Australian National Champions 🏆 and 2025 New Zealand National Champions 🏆 Box Hill Academy of Brass was established in 2013 as a band for beginner brass students aged 5+. The main objective of BHAB is to promote ensemble skills, which help to develop collaborative learning and teamwork. Rehearsals present a fun and friendly atmosphere in which new players can learn to play a brass instrument. All ages and abilities welcome, no previous experience with music is required.

🏆BOX HILL ACADEMY BRASS – VICTORIAN STATE CHAMPIONS 🏆

We are thrilled to announce that Box Hill Academy Brass Youth Band have been crowned Open C Grade Champions at the Victorian State Band Championships over the weekend.

It was an achievement for the band to prepare for a performance in an open grade, but to get the win was even more special. Some of the players in the band are only 10 years old!

The weekend kicked off with a bang as Broden Ford led Whitehorse Brass to success in Open B grade. Congratulations to the team at Whitehorse on their win!

A big congratulations to Darebin City Brass Northern Brass who came 2nd in C grade, Hyde Street Youth Band who placed 3rd and all of the bands who performed in the grade. We had a lot of players stick around and listen to a lot of bands and heard such great sounds from every band in the grade.

Thank you to the Victorian Bands' League and the volunteers from each of the bands for running such a great contest. A big shoutout to Brassbanned for their streaming of the performances across the entire weekend!

Finally, a big thank you to Richard Shirley for his adjudication and constructive feedback to help our band continue to grow.

Box Hill Academy Brass had a wonderful day at the Victorian State Solo and Ensemble Championships over the weekend 🎺🥁🎵🪊

Across the members of our bands, (some who play with multiple groups) we had 51 entries – that’s 51 performances! 😮

It’s always a busy day trying to get around to each room to see each other perform, but we put the running shoes on and did a great job. 👏

We had a number of great results across the day, with a special mention to our 6 State Champions: Ciaran E, Siena S, Tom F (x2), Raf P (x2), Ivy M, Ian W (x2 - incl. Champion of Champions).

Box Hill Academy Brass put on a show to finish the Celebration of Brass Concert on Sunday! 🔥

Between their 3 pieces, the audience got to see photos from the year so far, with highlights from the Australian National Band Championships, ANZAC Day Dawn Service and City March, various solo events and other performance opportunities.

🥳A Celebration of Brass Concert – Box Hill Academy Brass Training Band🥳

Our training band performed 3 items at the Celebration of Brass Concert last Sunday! 🎵

Playing 2 of their pieces from the recent Bendigo Eisteddfod, the band had also worked hard to learn a new piece within a few rehearsals for this concert.

Our new item showcased our fantastic percussion team. Each of the percussionists wrote a 2-bar solo and together they choreographed their own drumline feature! 🥁

If you’re interested in joining our training band for Term 3, we are on the lookout for trombones, euphoniums and tubas – come and join the team! 😊

⭐ On Saturday night, Max Lim - Principal Cornet of Box Hill Academy Brass, featured as a soloist in Footscray Yarraville City Band‘s concert, “Icons!”🎵

As National Junior Cornet champion, Max had the opportunity to take part in 2 rehearsals with the band before performing Percy Code’s Zelda. Conducted by Matt Little, the band sounded fantastic and put on an incredible concert. 🎺

Both Whitehorse Brass and Box Hill Academy Brass members filled 2 tables at the event, right at the front to cheer Max on! Everyone had a fantastic night!🥳

A big thank you to Rob Shirley, Matt Little and the committee at Footscray Yarraville City Band for organising the opportunity to showcase young brass musicians! ⭐

🎵Bendigo Eisteddfod - Junior Brass Section 🎵

Although we couldn’t take photos in the hall, Tim captured some great action-shots during our warm up!

The band loved performing on the big stage for esteemed adjudicator Dr. Matthew van Emmerik and the supportive families and friends in the audience. Although we didn’t get to hear Bendigo Youth Brass perform, it was great seeing all of the young brass players around the hall.

⭐ Last weekend, our training band had a fantastic time at the Bendigo Competitions Society Eisteddfod, competing in the Junior Brass Band section! ⭐

We were very grateful to our fantastic photographer, Tim, for making the trip up from Melbourne to capture much of the wonderful day! Here are some photos from before we went into the warm-up room.
