It is with great sadness that Box Hill City Band advise that Life member John Kelly passed away on Sunday 8th June after a long illness.

He was 83 years.

John was a member of the Box Hill Band for over 50 years. During these years he held the positions of President and Secretary over a long period and was the bands Drum Major for most of his period of membership.

John was awarded an Order of Australia for his services to the brass band community, and served on the executive of the Victorian Bands League for an extended period where he was currently the League’s Registrar.

The National Bands Council created a memorial trophy for Marching in John’s honour, awarded at the yearly National Band Championships.

While John’s achievements can be noted, it was his great personal connection to the bands members that was his greatest strength. He had a warm personality and was referred to as ‘Chief’ to those around him. Although… like many Drum Majors he seemed to have a have personality change when he had the Drum Majors mace in his hand….No longer Mister ‘nice guy’.

The duties he undertook for the band were extensive, and recently the committee asked John to list his duties so they could be shared. The list of tasks he carried out on a regular basis to keep the band (and the band hall) running, ran to well over a foolscap page.

John played Cornet in the Box Hill City Band and Whitehorse Brass Band and was a valuable supporter of the Box Hill Academy Brass. He was also a member of the Huffers & Puffers Brass Band that entertains at aged care centres.

He was a great family man who was very proud of his children and grandchildren- some were at times members of our junior bands.

John will be sadly missed

Vale John Kelly
Rest in Peace
