Glossy Black Cockatoo Project Opening

Yesterday was the opening of the Glossy Black Cockatoo Project, with the creativity of 23 primary schools on show across the gallery grounds. In the coming weeks, the cockatoos will be installed across parklands throughout the Highlands to create a community scavenger hunt – just in time for the school holidays!

This community initiative has been an wonderful opportunity to raise awareness of one of Australia's most beautiful - and most at-risk species and we thank all those who supported and participated.

Over the next two weeks our gallery spaces will be closed as we prepare for the opening of New Religion. Public programs will be running as usual.

We warmly invite you to join us for the opening of New Religion on Saturday 27th June (RSVP via the link in our bio). New Religion is a major group exhibition exploring how symbols of faith persist, evolve and continue to shape meaning long after belief itself has shifted.

Bringing together contemporary Australian artists, significant historical works and major institutional loans from the Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Australia and Chau Chak Wing Museum, New Religion places historical and contemporary works in dialogue, examining faith, ritual, power and devotion.

New Religion runs from 27th June to 18th October 2026.

Introducing the Glossy Black Cockatoo Project; a community initiative aimed at raising awareness of one of Australia's most beautiful - and most at-risk birds.

23 primary schools across the Wingecarribee have been busy learning about and creating their own Glossy Black Cockatoo sculpture. First Nations artists have painted a storyline on the back of each bird to connect them to Country.

This weekend, the cockatoos will return to Ngununggula for the official opening and for everyone to see them before they are installed across parklands throughout the Highlands to create a community scavenger hunt that will run during the school holidays. A playful way to bring people outside and raise awareness of the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo.

Join us on Sunday 14 th June (10.30-12.30) at the gallery for the opening of the
Glossy Black Cockatoo project.

The project is supported by the Southern Highlands Community Foundation and
brings together the First Nations community, Wingecarribee Shire Council, NSW
Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, Ngununggula, and Retford Park.
