As soon as the author of One Green Smoothie asked me if I'd be interested in illustrating her book, I knew I wanted to do it in collage. This pineapple was the first sample I made for her and all the other illustrations grew from there.

The first step in creating the illustrations for One Green Smoothie was making a whole stack of painted paper to collage with. The book has lots of fruit and veggies in it so I used scruffy old paint brushes (that I've had since I was a kid!) and a toothbrush to paint and flick layers of colours that would look natural and organic.

'Paper Bag and Salt', oil pastel on canvas

I can't get enough of oil pastels at the moment. I wish I'd started playing with them years ago.

The best thing about having made a paper wedding bouquet is that it will last for a very long time. If left where the sunlight can reach the colours will fade but it will still make me smile every time I look at it.

There's something very special about the softness of afternoon light coming through the window and pouring across the floor. This is the feeling I tried to capture in this work that I finished recently.

Here's another new work based on the view into the Jamison Valley at sunset right near where I live. I'm loving working with oil pastels at the moment - their bright rich colours keep drawing me in.
