Blackwood Players Inc.

Blackwood Players Inc. A welcoming and inclusive community theatre group, Blackwood Players has been proud to bring the arts to our foothills community since 1951.

Always seeking cast members, volunteers and audience members. What We're About...
At present, the Blackwood Players aim to produce two major productions per year, across a wide range of styles and genres. All this theatre is done in an entirely amateur capacity – that is, with no financial reward to the cast or crew involved. But the rewards are there, nevertheless – things like ensemble spirit, t

eamwork, building a successful character or set, rigging lights or organising Front of House…. All part of the ongoing challenge and excitement of doing drama as hobby…

It's More Than Acting....
Over the years, the Blackwood Players have let their collective hair down between productions to maintain and build morale and essential ensemble spirit. We have run social events throughout the year to celebrate year out! Workshops, led by experienced theatre people, have been offered, allowing participants to develop and polish acting and related skills. In the past the Blackwood Players have taken part in the Blackwood Christmas Pageant with a specially decorated float and zanily attired characters.

An exciting announcement from Greg Elliott:
I am extremely proud to be announcing that our 2nd production for 2026, is Arthur Miller's 'The Crucible'. The performance will take place in the Tower Arts Centre on the Springbank College campus, Pasadena.

We have assembled a wonderful cast including Harry Dewar who is a prominent local actor, theatre director and Drama teacher as Deputy Governor Danforth, Nic Betts as John Proctor, Susan Cilento as Abigail, Phoebe Wilson as Elizabeth Proctor, Doug De Souza as the land-grubbing, Thomas Putnam, Leighara Lawson as the believer who turns to witchcraft for answers in her life, Chris Dewar as Reverend Hale, Katie Adams as Mary Warren, Eva Wilde as Mercy Lewis and the list goes on.

Arthur Miller’s gripping drama, 'The Crucible' exposes how fear, suspicion and misuse of authority can tear a community [a country] apart. Written in response to the McCarthy trials of un American activity, 'The Crucible' reimagines the Salem witch hunts of 1692 as a stark warning about hysteria, power, and the cost of integrity. The central character is John Proctor, married to Elizabeth, and who has had an affair with a young woman, Abigail Williams. Some children have taken ill and while some parents seek answers from the doctor, others believe witchcraft is responsible. Under pressure for dancing in the woods and participating in witchcraft rituals, Abigail and other girls begin accusing citizens who they believe to be witches.

'The Crucible' lays bare the dangers of accusation and collective panic; it transforms historical events into a powerful exploration of paranoia, moral choice, and the fragile line between justice and vengeance. Blackwood Players will be setting this theatrical masterpiece in modern America where preachers still frighten congregations with tales of demons and witches and citizens can be gaoled because of false accusations.
Thanks to Heather Leane for her stunning artwork. Tickets available on TryBookings from July 1st.

Blackwood Players invites existing and aspiring actors to join the launch of a new play by Irish‑born playwright Brian Fox — A Relic of Old Decency. This script‑in‑hand performance will be staged on July 25th at the RAAF Association Hall, Mitcham, with audience feedback afterward. Auditions are on Sunday June 21, with casting completed by June 28 and seven relaxed rehearsals through July. Roles span AJ’s life from youth to old age, his family, and Dublin street characters. To express interest, contact Brian Fox at [email protected] or Greg: [email protected].

Blackwood Players are seeking registrations of interest from actors keen to be part of a staged reading of Brian Fox's play, A Relic of Old Decency, which is set in Ireland.

The staged reading would take place in the Mitcham area, date TBC, to gauge interest and feedback from audiences, around the potential of staging the play in full in the future.

Rehearsals will be held at the Elliott residence in Hawthorndene.

It will be a great opportunity to be involved onstage in a fabulous play written by a local playwright, without the long commitment usually required for our productions.

To register your interest and for further information, please contact Greg Elliott via [email protected] or 0402 616 924.

Crates Give-away!

Thanks to Fleurieu Milk Co for donating these crates which were used as props in Love.

We are now looking to pass them onto someone who can use them. There are around 20-25 crates and we'd prefer them to go in one batch but happy to separate if required.

Fyi - some of them have been coloured in a little, but doesn't affect use.

Please contact Greg on 0402 616 924 or [email protected] to express interest.

(Children, actors and choreographer not included).

To our volunteers this National Volunteer Week, "thank you"! We are a volunteer run group, relying on volunteers on stage, as tech support and in backstage roles, on our committee, in our front of house team, behind the wheel of our social media... doing all sorts of jobs to keep our community connected with the arts.

And we've been doing it for 75 years!

Thank you. If this year is your year to volunteer, consider volunteering with Blackwood Players! Contact us via [email protected] for more.

Putting this show together has truly been a family affair 💛

Did you know we have multiple family connections in our cast?

Jacob (one of our Oslos) and Ellie (who plays young Euley and one of Danica’s siblings) are brother and sister—making for a very sweet moment at the end when Ellie runs up to give him a hug. Their sister Chloe has also been doing a fantastic job backstage as a stagehand!

Our Ruthy, Carly, is the aunt of Charlotte, one of our young ensemble members, who is doing a brilliant job as Petr, the Goddess of the Water, and Rob from the pub.

Bobby-Lee from our Ensemble (who plays Pete's mum Evie) has introduced her kids, Bea and Dougal, to the fun of theatre—their performances as bears and Danica’s siblings add some very cute moments to the show.

And our Director, Brooke, is the mum of Jack (one of our ‘Petes’) and Nancy, who is loving being a bear, a sibling, and part of the wild storm scene.

These are just some of the wonderful young people bringing Love to life.

We’d love you to join us for our final performances:
📅 Today – 1pm
📅 Tomorrow – 1pm
(Our 4pm show is now sold out!)

Thank you so much for your support ❤️
(And thanks also to the helpful parents who've been assisting front of house, backstage, as chauffeurs, costume finders, and bringers of snacks! We appreciate you!)

Gareth Chin appreciation post...

Gareth has composed some beautiful music for our show, Love, by Finegan Kruckemeyer. Gareth's score helps to conjure the magic in our sequences where we learn the stories behind our townsfolk's most precious things - their love luggage... what they want to save from the upcoming storm. He even turned Brooke's tune for the Mellingong anthem into an actual song!

Gareth is a well-known local musician and composer, and a long-term member of bands including Golonka and the Various Nefarious, and a frequent collaborator with Anya Anastasia.

He also taught our Director Brooke how to eat like a Malaysian and once convinced her to try to sing in Russian!

Fun fact: Slingsby Theatre Company famously toured with one of our writer Finegan Kruckemeyer's plays, Man Covets Bird. And Gareth was in it!

If you come along to Love tomorrow (Friday), or either of the Saturday shows, we hope you enjoy Gareth's work, which he kindly wrote for our show free of charge. Thank you Gareth. Legend.
