A tutorial we happened upon has guided us through 16 technique tips for painting with watercolours. And it will be a valuable reference sheet for future reference we feel. Here is an example.

Our first Art@TheShed workshop is done and dusted, and it couldn’t have been better! Lampwork (glass bead making) conducted by all things glass aficionado Monica Provan, who just happens to reside right here in Birregurra. Plus we are so fortunate to have the Mens Shed to operate out of as it’s perfectly set up for workshops such as this. Flames, spitting glass and gas bottles require an ideal workspace! Monica guided us through the process (in layman’s terms) brilliantly and pointed out the safety issues regarding gas, flames and molten glass, along with the tools required and how to use them. We all had an amazing time. And thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. So much so, that we all lost track of time, due to being ‘blown away’ by this medium, so we’ll be doing this workshop again! Thank you Monica, for your expertise and guidance, and we are so looking forward to our next session!

Monica Provan (together with her partner Nick) is the owner/operator of Ugly Stuff in Birregurra, where she displays and sells her glassware alongside a fascinating array of beautifully odd and somewhat peculiar vintage and new wares.

This week our newer members had their first play with acrylics. And the rest of us re-visited this medium with them. The tutorial was a little trickier than first thoughts, with no sound or an idea of equipment needed, but we got through it well enough. A few moans, lots of laughter and quite a bit of mess to clean up afterward! Some enjoyed the experience. And some didn’t. But that’s art. And it isn’t learned in a day. It mostly takes a lifetime I suspect. Despite all of that I’m sure we all picked up a few more tips and hacks to note to self. And I am again blown away by the differing perspectives of the subject, and the colour palette’s chosen. Good job everyone. 🎨

We were back into watercolour this week, with an agricultural theme that we really enjoyed, and an easy to follow tutorial that got us through the exercise with fewer moans than usual.
Surprise surprise. We learned a bit more about this medium, which is always helpful, plus we picked up a few more tips/hacks to note for future use. One of which is to never substitute salt with sugar when seeking to create texture in a painting. Which we did. And when you combine wet sugar, with a hairdryer to dry said wet paint, the result is a melted, toffee-like mess on the page, rather than texture. So it was a mental note to selves to never do that again. And a packet of salt on the shopping list!

Q: When is a good art tutorial not a good art tutorial?

A: When it gives no indication of the subject, no picture of the completed subject, and very little indication of the paint and tints required. Plus it had no audio, and in the end, the video succumbed to lens blur!!!

And we artists were not happy. Not happy at all! Hence art at the shed, for today, was not off to a good start. Not at all. But then it was! And amidst the cries of ¥@&$, we had all managed to create 4 very different versions of one unknown subject! So it was a good end to a bad start indeed. And what clever problem solvers we artists are becoming! Well, some of us. See if you can pick the artist amongst us that dislikes painting flowers! But job well done everyone. 🎨

Last week it was gouche again, however this time, there was no tutorial to follow! We would paint it as we see it to be! And the few hand picked proteas from my garden, plonked into an old vase, served their purpose well. Loud protestation filled the room, together with lots of sighing and mutterings of “I can’t do this” and “this will be too hard!” But as the exercise began, and the morning became afternoon and we hadn’t even noticed, the room was now quiet. Happiness, mixed with mutterings of “I really like this” and “I did it. I did it” now filled the room. And once again, all was good at Art@TheShed.

I’m behind again so a quick catch up is called for!

2 weeks ago. Gouache again. And a bit of a whimsical landscape tutorial to work with. Our newest members are enjoying their Mondays, which is wonderful, especially the tutorials. Monday’s are fun days! And we are so lucky to have the TV here at the shed to assist us with our learning.

This week at Art@TheShed, it was a painting exercise using gouache paint and a lot of colour mixing! And whilst it was a lengthy online tutorial, coupled with the odd expletive and cry of woe, the resulting images, finished or not, are delightful, colourful and so worth the pain and effort. As was a sketching exercise done by one our members. Good job everyone!
