WINGLESS SPRINTS SET FOR TWO-NIGHT SHOWDOWN AT THE JOHN DAY CLASSIC
The Wingless Sprints return to the Perth Motorplexthis Friday and Saturday as part of the massive John Day Classic weekend, with a strong two-night field ready to deliver high-intensity, elbows-up racing befitting one of WA’s most meaningful speedway events.
This weekend is extra special for the division, with the Wingless Sprints not only racing as part of the Classic but also contesting the Garry Walsh Cup, adding even more significance and pride to the results.
Garry Walsh is a deeply respected figure within the Wingless Sprint community, a dedicated competitor, car owner, mentor, and friend whose passion for racing has left a lasting mark on those around him. Instrumental in introducing the Wingless Sprints to WA in 2007, the Cup raced in his honour stands as a tribute to his contributions to the WA speedway family.
The class itself has been electric to start the 2025/26 season, and the story of the year so far has been Matthew Iwanow (Iwanow Motorsport) who arrives at the Motorplex having won all three championship rounds to date, including last weekend’s victory at Manjimup. Iwanow is the undisputed benchmark right now, carrying a perfect scorecard and all the momentum as he looks to keep the streak alive across two nights.
But he won’t have it easy.
Standing out among the challengers is Daran Humfrey (Humfrey Racing), who already has a Motorplex feature win to his name this season and has consistently shown the pace to threaten for more. With both the John Day Classic and the Garry Walsh Cup on the line, Humfrey shapes as one of the most dangerous threats to Iwanow’s dominance.
Newly crowned South Australian champion Blake Walsh is also in the field and he certainly isn’t here to just make up the numbers in the Walsh owned #23 machine.
A pile of front-running names also add serious depth to the field. Travis Armstrong (Armstrong Motorsport) has begun the season strongly and remains a constant danger around the high banks of the Motorplex, while Heydon Hicks (Hicks Racing ) has also been impressive and will be hoping to continue that run.
Brandon Sharpe (Sharpe Motorsport) will be hoping to bounce back from an unfortunate mechanical issue while running strongly last weekend, while names like Tom Britton (Tommy Britton Motorsport), Riley Phillips (Phillips Motorsport ) and Ryan Mitchell (Mitchell Motorsport) have all shown moments of genuine pace in early-season racing and are all capable of throwing surprises into the results across two nights.
Friday and Saturday’s combined entry list also features racers like Brad Mitchell, Jye McKenzie (Jye Mckenzie Racing) and rookie Brendan Newmarch (Newmarch Racing): drivers who have shown cool under pressure and could easily push toward the front when it counts.
Add in plenty of other big names including Brad Fitzgerald, impressive rookie Tyler McQuilkin (McQuilkin Motorsport), Blake Scarey (Scarey One Motorsports) and the returning Matty Fellowes (Fellowes Motorsport) and we are assured of plenty of fierce racing over the two nights.
With prestige, points, and two major honours up for grabs, the John Day Classic and the Garry Walsh Cup, the Wingless Sprints are primed for one of their biggest weekends of the season. Whether Iwanow can continue his perfect run, whether Humfrey can strike again at the Plex, or whether a new name rises to the occasion, one thing is certain…
The Wingless Sprints will put on a show the General and Garry Walsh can be proud of!
