Rivers Edge Wilderness Park was 30km from Mt Field as the crow flies. We on the other hand had a 2 hour drive via Hobart.

The last 10km was a dirt track. We set up and wondered off to the river for a swim. The river saw shallow with a slow currant.

The next day we popped into Huonville for a look around and supplies. After lunch we enjoyed a swim in a different part of the river, a deeper and more adventurous section. The water was fresh, but packed with people due to the ‘heat wave’ of 35 degrees hitting the state.

The weather turned and we were unsure about the gum trees we were camped under. We made the snap decision to pack up and head towards Bruny Island. Not long after the power went out, which meant the water did too. The porta-loos started rolling in as we rolled out... the joke continued.

The drive from Cradle to Mt Feild took us via Queenstown. This was a big day driving for the guys, who as always did an incredible job.

We stopped for coffee and supplies in Queenstown. The 99 bends directly out of Queenstown were tight, with stunning scenes.

In Mt Field we stayed at “Left of Field”, which lived up to its name. This quirky venue offered unique amenities, to which came in surprise. The ONE porta-shower and the few porta-loos turned into a running joke for the remainder of the trip. We settled in and had a drink to calm one particular curly girl down!! Again, want to guess who fired up??

The next day we heading into the National Park ready for a morning walk. The Rangers explained what the different animal droppings look like, using plastic coated poo as examples. This kept the fabulous five occupied while the adults decided which track we’d take.

The walking tracks were breathtaking! Russell Falls was divine, another highlight of the trip. The size of the trees quickly caught our attention, and amazed us with their beauty. To the children’s enjoyment more Pademelons greeted us on our adventure.

After our walk we drove to the top of Mt Feild to Mason’s Snow Feilds. This was a bendy dirt track, with more amazing views.

In the afternoon the fabulous five went for their first swim of the trip. This was short lived, ending suddenly when JW got tangled in fishing line... it tangled around his ankles with a lure sticking into his foot. After a small frustrated outburst and some TLC, both Jack and Mum recovered!

On our second, and last night, we were rewarded with an evening performance of Tasmania’s oldest band, who we’d never heard of. Annie was the star of the dance floor, stealing the hearts of many. She loved every minute in the spotlight!

After Hellyer Gorge we continued onto Burnie, enjoying fish and chips by the beach and breathing in what we were told to be the freshest air in the world!

Before heading back to camp we did a tour around the Hellyer Road Distillery. We discovered how whiskey was made, developed and stored.

Our guide tried to impress us with their stainless steel tanks and automation system that could be controlled remotely... Randall and Aaron had a bit of prior knowledge in these fields!

We bought a few bottles and headed home to continue tasting at camp.

Christmas Day was exactly what we’d hoped. Delicious food, great company and spoilt children!!

On Christmas Eve we went on a drive to explore the surrounding locations. It began at Hellyer Gorge. We could have stayed here all day, taking in the beautiful views, walking along hidden tracks and along rocky shores.

Our first destination was Cradle Mountain. We spent 5 days here- celebrating Christmas, exploring many walking tracks and enjoying the wildlife.

We developed a soft spot for Pademelons, or packmelons as they were nicknamed by the fabulous five.

Devils at Cradle was a highlight. A must see for anyone traveling to Cradle.

We left Griffith with a temperature of
41 degrees and rising. We watched the temperature drop more than 20 degrees on route to Melbourne.

Boarding the Spirit of Tasmania was easy (on the way over!) We hit the bar for a drink before settling into bed! The adults woke at exactly 12.33am and all knew we had hit the headlands. The waves crashing into the boat took our focus and limited our sleep, while the children all slept fairly well. Luckily we all remained well and were grateful to see land approaching when we got up.

Want to guess which one of us was petrified on the ship??

Today the adventure that took us 12 months to plan has come to an end!

We traveled 11,000 km, through 5 states in 5 weeks! We’ve had a blast, and are all still friends!!!

Here’s a quick run down of the items we loved and wouldn’t take again.

The best thing we ever did was open a joint bank account, which we all had a card to. We added money each week, for around 10 months. This gave us over $8000, which paid for accommodation, groceries, tours, restaurant meals and when stopping for an afternoon drink. This helped eliminate all those “I owe you” moments, and meant only one person needed to check in, or make bookings. We paid for diesel separately, spending over $2000 each, paying up to $2.20 per liter at Uluru.

We ate incredibly well!!! We traveled with 3 car fridges, 2 as fridges and 1 as a freezer. Hanwood Butchery were fabulous and cryovaced our meat into the meal side portions of our request. This helped eliminate food wastage.
We cooked a lot before we left, these frozen meals were a huge blessing on those days where we were traveling all day or out exploring.
We always planned our meals a few days ahead (Eleisha is a freak in the kitchen! So glad we brought her along!)

We also drank really well, some nights too well! The amount of whiskey, wine and bourbon consumed was not counted, but a good time was had and that’s all that matters!

All five children had an iPad and a set of headphones. Each family bought a Wireless Hard-drive from Leading Edge Computers Griffith, which we could not have traveled without!! This little beauty allowed the children to wirelessly watch movies from their iPads whilst traveling. This was a massive help on those long drives.

The Wiki Camps app was brilliant! Other travelers recommendations helped us decide which places and tours were suitable for us. Our beautiful friend Chonny was also incredible, she was traveling a few days in front of us in the Top End and provided great advise and feedback! Unfortunately we just never caught up to her!!

The Dyson Stick was incredible! There is nothing like a clean van and car to make a women smile! We will never travel without it again!!

Two way radios were fabulous, as there isn’t much phone service. We played car trivia and told jokes between vehicles to keep everyone alert and to pass the time. Annie may have sang a song or two as well!

The scooters were hardly used, these are the one thing we could have easily traveled without! When they did come out the children loved them, but there wasn’t enough opportunity to warrant having them on board.

We shared a massive amount of laughs, created incredible memories and all grew closer within our family networks. We have all learnt so much and have strengthen our love for our incredibly beautiful country! It was a trip of a life time, but we are all excited to be getting home.

Go out and see Australia, we bloody loved it!

Thanks for coming along for the ride! Stayed tuned for the next adventure, and EM’s photographs!

Whilst everyone else was on holidays, this women did not stop! How someone can ride a tandem bike 14km around Uluru with her camera around her neck amazes me!
Thank you for all the amazing images you have captured Leishi!!
