For the rangers of the River Murray and Mallee Aboriginal Corporation (RMMAC), caring for Country is both a practical responsibility and a connection to generations of family and community.

The ranger team works across the Riverland on projects ranging from cultural heritage surveys and land management to wildlife monitoring, community events and environmental restoration.

Rangers Nicolas Sumner (pictured), Kaleb Karpany and Cameron Rankine are among those working to protect and restore their traditional lands.

Their work recently included preparing the site of the former Jerry Mason Centre, now Kawun Wampu Cultural Centre (featuring the Ngamrapku Cafe), a site that has long held significance for Aboriginal people in the region.

RRMAC Rangers have been at TAFE SA in Berri this week for workplace health and safety (WHS) training. Topics covered included WHS legislation, workplace policies and procedures, codes of practice, risk assessments, safety inspections, safe operating procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE), and bird flu safety.
The training also included a visit to the NPWSA depot, where Rangers conducted safety inspections on fire response vehicles and learnt more about workplace safety in operational environments.
All participants did an excellent job and are looking forward to returning to TAFE in a few weeks to complete their training.

While Indigenous people reap little reward from Australia's native food industry, a regional Indigenous cafe is taking ownership of their traditions and passing on the knowledge to younger generations.
