Barragga Yangga, Many Songs took place over the weekend, and we hardly have words. A completely otherworldly performance experience curated by Four Winds First Nations Creative Director Cheryl Overton (nee Davison) & Djinama Yilaga Choir, produced by Four Winds.

Whilst otherworldly in feeling, it was tangibly grounded in Country, culture and community accessed through deep listening thanks to the unique storytelling of First Nations song and instrument, classical composition, taiko drumming and contemporary choir collaboration.

Supported by New South Wales Government through Create NSW and Destination New South Wales, Navigate Arts, Gang Gang Residencies, Bundanon Trust, QPAC and South East Arts.

WORLD PREMIERE | After 3 years in the making, a major new work by Cheryl Overton (new Davison) & Djinama Yilaga launches this Mother’s Day ✨

Barragga Yangga “Many Songs” emerges from a powerful creative journey on Djiringanj Country. What began as shared song and storytelling has grown into a major new work led by Yuin voices and grounded in community.

At its heart is the intergenerational choir Djinama Yilaga, whose members have created a cycle of original songs that bring Dhurga language vividly into the present.

Affinity Quartet will perform alongside Djinama Yilaga, with percussion by Stonewave Taiko, featuring music and compositions by Heath Cullen, Fred Leone, Roland Peelman, and Stuart Hunter, as well as voices from local choirs and Bermagui Public School’s culture class—all presented within a visual installation at the Windsong Pavilion.

These songs carry more than melody. They hold storylines of ancestors, Country and seasonal knowledge, from the lightning spirit Bundoola to the rhythms of whales returning with the wattle bloom, alongside reflections on family, memory and growing up on Yuin lands.

Barragga Yangga will be an immersive experience, inviting you to listen, sit, gather and connect. “Yaway means come and sit down. A simple invitation, and a powerful one. This is music as meeting place. Story as continuity. Language as something carried forward — together.

Come for the morning 11 am performance or enjoy lunch under the spotted gums and catch the 2pm show. Under 16s free — everybody is welcome.
