As BFF26 heads into its final days for 2026, there are still some incredible films left to discover.

Dead Man’s Wire - Gus Van Sant’s gripping true-crime thriller starring Bill Skarsgård, Al Pacino, Colman Domingo and Dacre Montgomery. Critics have praised Skarsgård’s performance, with the film drawing comparisons to classics like Dog Day Afternoon.

Gaucho Gaucho - one of the most acclaimed documentaries of the year, winner of Sundance’s Special Jury Award for Sound and the Letterboxd Piazza Grande Award at Locarno.

Silenced - a powerful new documentary exploring how defamation laws are used to silence survivors, featuring Jennifer Robinson, Brittany Higgins and Amber Heard. This was the opening night film for Sydney Film Festival this year, a big accolade.

The Opera! - a wildly inventive reimagining of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, blending opera, cinema and spectacle. Officially selected for both the Rome Film Festival and International Film Festival Rotterdam!

Whispers in the Woods - a breathtaking French box-office sensation pairing extraordinary nature cinematography with an award-winning score. One of Christian’s top picks!

Whistle - back by popular demand after selling out opening night. This film received a standing ovation at Sydney film festival this year and everyone at opening night said it’s a must see!

Cheese tasting, craft beer pairings and one of the most delightful documentaries in this year’s festival.

Before our screening of Shelf Life, we’re teaming up with Suzanne Dhesi • Dhezi Deli and for a special cheese tasting and pairing experience celebrating the world’s most extraordinary food.

Winner of Best Documentary Cinematography at Tribeca, Shelf Life travels from Switzerland to Japan, Georgia, Egypt and Wales, meeting the passionate cheesemakers, affineurs and curators dedicated to perfecting their craft. Funny, thoughtful and unexpectedly moving, it’s a film about cheese, time, tradition and the art of growing older.

Join us for an afternoon of exceptional flavours, great company and a documentary that’s guaranteed to leave you hungry.

Today’s going to be a juicy one.

We’ve got two legendary surf films hitting the big screen, both absolute icons in their own right, and both being presented in ways that honour the eras they came from.

First up at 5pm is Playgrounds in Paradise, Alan & Evelyn Rich’s globe-trotting 1977 surf classic, screening from its original 16mm print. This print is nearly 50 years old and still carries the marks of a life spent travelling from screening to screening around the world.

Featuring surfing legends including Shaun Tomson, Michael Ho, Mark Richards, Larry Bertlemann and Michael Peterson, the film captures a generation that redefined surfing across Hawaii, Africa, Malibu, Puerto Rico, Mexico and France.

Then at 7pm, we’re incredibly excited to present the newly remastered edition of Paul Witzig’s cult classic All Down The Line.

For many, this is one of the defining surf films of the 1980s. Featuring two-time world champion Tom Carroll and breathtaking surfing from Australia, Hawaii, Java and Indonesia, it remains one of the most influential surf films ever made.

And as if that wasn’t enough, Paul Witzig himself will be joining us for a very special conversation after the screening alongside Danny Wills, Denis Nattrass, Dick Hoole and Billy Wychgel, moderated by Peter Wilson. It’s not often you get to hear directly from the people who made a film like this, let alone have so many of them in the room together.

Throughout the evening, our friends at Friends Lab will be transforming the A&I Hall with looping Super 8 projections, including hand-developed surf footage by local filmmaker Levi Strauss Cranston 👼🏼. Original cinema tickets from the Playgrounds in Paradise tour will also be on display, offering a little glimpse into surf cinema history.

Whether you’re a surfer, a film lover, an analogue enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates seeing stories on the big screen with a crowd, this is one of those festival days that feels genuinely special.

See you at the hall!

Widely regarded as one of the defining surf films of the late 1980s, Paul Witzig’s classic follows two-time world champion Tom Carroll and a crew of young surfers across Indonesia, Hawaii and Australia, capturing not just incredible waves, but the philosophy, adventure and spirit of surfing itself.

Now beautifully restored and digitally remastered, this iconic film returns to the big screen as part of Surf Classics Day at BFF26.

Following the screening, join us for a special Q&A featuring the team behind the film and its restoration:
Paul Witzig - Director
Danny Wills - Co-star
Denis Nattrass - Composer
Dick Hoole - Cinematography
Billy Wychgel - Film Remastering

Moderated by Peter Wilson, Associate Producer.

A rare opportunity to hear firsthand from the filmmakers, collaborators and craftspeople who helped create and preserve one of Australian surfing’s most celebrated films.

Are you obsessed with analogue photography, Super 8 film, grain, light leaks and old cameras?

Then SUPER NATURE is for you.

Shot entirely on Super 8 by 40 filmmakers across 25 countries and 5 continents, this extraordinary film is a global love letter to nature. From white rhinos and flamingos to weedy sea dragons and tiny snails, it captures the beauty, wonder and fragility of the natural world through one of cinema’s most beloved formats.

Making its Australian Premiere at BFF26, SUPER NATURE is a feast for the eyes and a reminder of why we fell in love with film in the first place.

We’re also thrilled to welcome Tasmanian filmmaker and underwater cinematographer Fraser Johnston, one of the 40 contributors to the film, for a special post-screening Digital/Analog Filmmaking Panel exploring the enduring appeal of analogue image-making and how filmmakers are blending old and new technologies today.

WOW. What an opening night.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us last night for a sold-out screening of Whistle. The hall was full, the laughter was loud, and the atmosphere was something truly special.

And after an overwhelming response to opening night, we’re delighted to announce an additional screening of Whistle on Saturday 20 June at 11:00am. If you missed out on tickets the first time around, here’s your chance to catch one of the most joyful films of the festival.

Thank you to director Christopher Nelius and our wonderful whistlers Molly Lewis, Lauren, and Carole for making the journey to Bangalow and sharing such a memorable evening with us.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible sponsors and supporters who helped bring the night to life - Byroncello for the spritzes, Byron Bay Coffee Company , and the legends at Common People Brewing Co. for the delicious pizzas and excellent beers.

Most of all, thank you to our audience. Festivals are about coming together to share stories, conversations and experiences, and you made our opening night feel incredibly special.

We’re only just getting started. Here’s to eleven days of remarkable films, inspiring guests and unforgettable moments.

This footage was captured during a live performance by Romano Crivici and Carla Thackrah, offering a glimpse into the immersive musical world they create together at .

This June, the pair return to Bangalow Film Festival to lead the live score for Home Of The Blizzard, a remarkable film concert pairing Frank Hurley’s iconic silent film documenting Douglas Mawson’s 1911 Antarctic expedition with new music performed live by Romano, Carla, guest musicians and the eight-voice Syrinx Vocal Ensemble.

Blending strings, voice and contemporary composition, the score breathes new life into Hurley’s extraordinary Antarctic footage, creating a powerful and deeply moving cinematic experience.

Featuring a reworking of Hurley’s historic film from his three-year voyage, alongside contemporary material documenting the effects of climate change in Antarctica today, the performance creates a fascinating dialogue between past and present.

Romano and Carla will be familiar to many festival-goers as the creators of The Mushroom Whisperers and the music for Follow the Rain, two standout experiences from the 2024 Bangalow Film Festival.

Part cinema, part concert and unlike anything else in this year’s program, Home Of The Blizzard is a truly unforgettable big-screen experience.
