My uni course coordinator told me to calm down. “Calm down!”, he said, “you’ll get a good mark anyway!”. I explained I wasn’t motivated by marks but the interest and absorption in whatever I was working on. While he had his heart in the right place, truly, I recalled all of the times in my life I’ve been told to pull my head in, to try less hard, not to show off, etc etc.
And then I got angry…. The next day, at uni, the task was to prepare a drawing to a song of our choosing. I chose a raw, powerful one - Marianne Faithfull’s Broken English. And expressed myself in the piece.

Experimental drawing: projection of John Olsen’s Five Bells onto some mannequins. I like the use of rust as a shadow even though it’s a warm tone and making it recede is Against The Rules.

I created these wild self portraits one evening as an exploration of my self concept, using ink and oil pastel. They are a metre or so tall and I love them! I was listening to Transglobal Underground, and the acid colours reflect the music I think!
