Today, a State Funeral was held in Ballarat to honour the life of The Hon. Robert Ian Knowles AO.

Rob understood that a festival rooted in Ballarat was not a small or peripheral thing. That the arts, like good policy, are a matter of what a society chooses to value and sustain. As an ambassador for the Ballarat International Foto Biennale, he brought that belief to everything he did for us.

We are grateful for his warmth, his wisdom, and his steadfast commitment. Our thoughts are with his family and all who loved him.

GroupFoto is your chance to go behind the scenes of a major arts festival and help shape how it connects with young people.

Through a series of hands-on workshops during 2026 and 2027, you’ll work with Ballarat Foto staff, artists and mentors to develop a youth photography program for the September 2027 school holidays.

GroupFoto members will receive a $250 honorarium each year.

Applications close at 11:59 pm, Monday 11 May 2026.

Creating with Architecture: A Photography and Poetry Workshop offers participants the opportunity to develop their work from the session for possible inclusion in an online exhibition on the Ballarat Foto website.

You’ll join photographer Georgina Matherson with poet and historian Nadia Rhook for a hands-on workshop exploring photography and poetry as tools for shaping creative responses to place.

Who should apply for GroupFoto?

Ballarat Foto is looking for 10 high school students from Ballarat or regional Victoria to share their ideas for the 2027 Ballarat International Foto Biennale.

You don’t need to be an artist or photographer to apply. We’re looking for participants who value the arts and its role in shaping healthy communities.
