Album Reviews: Ellie Holcomb - CANYON (2021)
This latest offering shows Ellie is gaining musical depth and ability to develop the the music to enhance the lyrics for individual songs. There is still there occasion in which she sinks back into repetitive, hypnotic sound, but by and large this is a wonderful album with several valuable tracks.
Given Ellie's musical progression, I'll look forward to her next album in hope she demonstrates yet more ability to really develop the musical theme and instrumentation for individual songs.
Brand New Day: a boppy song of hope
Bridge: ok, but theologically places a lot of emphasis on is building a bridge to God, which is the theme of mystery religions, not the Christian faith where YHWH intervenes in man's affairs with redemption.
Canyon: musically more sophisticated and beautiful lyrics
Color: Spacious and big, but not loud. Nicely produced. A revealing song of personal reflection, fully of lyrical allegory
Constellations: Ellie stretches her voice, appealing to God. It's quiet, but emotional.
Gold: a love song of speciation for a husband, talking about his journey. Lots of space musically. Overall it's got a captivating quality due to the lyrics, although there is s slight tendency to sink into hypnotic musical repetition
I Don't Want To Miss It: almost African American at the start, but develops into a jaunty celebration of God's moments of intervention and revelation in our life
I Will Carry You: God carries us. Exhibits some of the dreamy repetition Elite can suffer from, but lifts above that floor to distinguish itself. Lyrically valuable.
Mine: too slow and a bit of a durge. It may have lyrical value, but the music just detracts from it
Paradox: Considers the paradox that we find YHWH in our low places "Down in a valley looking up, your have never felt so close". Given the tendency of the modern church to diminist theology and a constantly 'hilltop lifestyle', this song really paints a real picture of where YHWH meets us and helps us.
Stronger: The music immediately matches the nature of the lyrics. "You are stronger than your fear". Musically pleasant, but not outstanding
Sweet Ever After: an anthem of glory to come
