The Balaklava Silo Art Project was started by a very small group of locals five years ago.
πͺππ¬? Because attracting visitors to Balaklava creates a positive economic spin-off effect for our pubs, cafes, servos and shops in the town's Main Street. It also creates a strong sense of town pride and shows people that our little farming town matters.
π§ππ πππ¦πππ‘ was voted on by the public a couple of years ago, with examples placed in Foodland. The chosen design is an actual photograph taken at the Balaklava Racing Club. It's colourful, it's bold and it's uniquely Balakalva.
We know there are community members who don't think the design gives a good representation of Balaklava, and there are maybe many who are unaware of just how significant the town's affiliation with the club has been. The post below highlights some of this.
πͺπππ§ π‘π’πͺ? These things take a lot of background work! And hats off to the women who've stuck by this passion project, through community liaison, costly engineering reports and a whole lot of red tape. Excitingly, one of Australia's finest muralists, Sam Bates (aka Smug) loves the design, and has accepted an invitation to paint the Silo.
There's still plenty of that pain staking red tape to get through...but no pain no gain! AND there's some cash to be raised to get Smug here with his paints to put Balaklava on the Silo Art Trail. THEN there's the beautifying of the railway corridor!
We've welcomed a couple of new members to the Silo Art Committee, and plan to keep you updated along the way. If you'd like to help out with this community project, make a donation or provide some constructive feedback, we're here for it!
