I'm really looking forward to resuming my residency with Creative Brimbank next year and getting back into the studio to continue developing Fractured Echoes.

I've had a bit of a hiatus from the project this year. A significant personal event shifted quite a lot for me, including my mindset, my priorities and, unexpectedly, my ability to create.

It's a strange place to find yourself as an artist. Wanting to make work, having ideas and knowing what you want to achieve, but simply not having the mental capacity to do it.

My head was all over the place, and things that would normally excite me felt like an enormous amount of hard work. Even getting into the studio felt overwhelming at times.

I've had to accept that creativity isn't something you can always switch on, no matter how much you want to.

I'm finally feeling that excitement again. The ideas are coming back, the motivation is returning, and I'm genuinely raring to go!

I'm incredibly grateful to Creative Brimbank and to everyone who has continued to support me and this project, particularly during a period when I haven't been able to give it the attention I'd hoped.

I'm looking forward to getting back into the studio, experimenting, collaborating and seeing where the next stage of development takes me.

With Melbourne Fringe in full swing, we decided to embrace the theatrical spirit for a recent private online art workshop, creating Venetian-inspired masquerade masks.

We explored a range of painting and decorative techniques, starting with a base coat before building up intricate patterns using fine brushes, metallic paints and layering techniques.

Participants experimented with delicate brushstrokes, swirling patterns, floral motifs and metallic highlights to create depth and dimension. We also looked at incorporating different textures and materials, including tulle and decorative embellishments, to give the masks a more dramatic finish.

A lovely way to bring a little bit of theatre into a private creative session, even from behind a screen!

One of the things I really enjoy about my creative practice is finding ways to share it with communities beyond the performance space.

My work often brings together movement, sound and storytelling, and I love opening up that process through workshops, giving participants an insight into how ideas are researched, developed, experimented with and eventually shaped into a performance.

It's not about teaching people choreography or asking them to recreate something I've made. It's about introducing them to the creative methods I use, from exploring movement prompts and experimenting with sound to discovering how the two can influence one another.

I particularly enjoy seeing how people respond to these methods through their own experiences, interpretations and creative choices.

For me, these workshops are a two-way exchange. Participants gain an understanding of what goes into making interdisciplinary performance work, while their questions, ideas and responses often encourage me to look at my own practice from a different perspective.

Making the creative process accessible is just as important to me as sharing the finished work.

Week 3 of our online Anime & Manga series!

This week, we took inspiration from the wonderful world of Studio Ghibli, exploring its distinctive illustration style, charming characters and imaginative storytelling.

We looked at how to create characters using softer facial features, expressive eyes, simple clothing and natural poses, before experimenting with adding little fantasy creatures to bring our sketches to life.

The focus was on keeping things simple, using light pencil strokes, building up shapes and allowing a few imperfections along the way.

Participants were then encouraged to combine the techniques we'd practised with their own ideas, creating original characters and quirky little companions inspired by the Studio Ghibli aesthetic.

Next week is our final session, where we'll be exploring mythical anime characters.

This week, we facilitated a painting workshop for a wonderful women's group, bringing everyone together for a relaxed session filled with colour, creativity and conversation.

Our Sydney-based facilitator did a fantastic job guiding participants through the process, encouraging everyone to experiment, explore different techniques and put their own personal stamp on their canvases.

What makes this workshop particularly lovely is that the finished artworks will be used to decorate the walls of their community shed!

It's always rewarding knowing that the creativity doesn't end when the workshop finishes. These pieces will become part of a shared space that the women can continue to enjoy.

A little throwback to a few years ago, in the lead-up to my first Melbourne premiere of a dance work that I would eventually go on to tour.

Looking back, this period was quite significant for me. Having spent years performing professionally, my career had taken me in several different creative directions, from teaching and sound engineering to writing and building my own arts business.

While dance had always remained part of my life, creating my own performance work was something I was beginning to reconnect with.

This particular experience reminded me how much I loved the process of dance making. The research, the experimentation, the challenges, the collaborations and, of course, the opportunity to tell stories through movement.

It also gave me the confidence to start exploring my own choreographic voice again, without feeling that I needed to create within the boundaries of my classical training.

In many ways, it was the beginning of finding my way back to dance making, but with a completely different perspective and a much broader creative toolkit.

Funny how sometimes you have to venture into other disciplines to rediscover what you loved doing in the first place.

One of the things I love about incorporating mixed media into our art workshops is the freedom it gives participants to experiment beyond traditional painting and drawing.

Why stick to just one medium when you can combine several?

In our workshops, we encourage participants to explore different materials, textures and techniques, layering watercolours, paints, pens, fabrics, paper and even three-dimensional embellishments to bring their ideas to life.

These fashion-inspired pieces are a lovely example of how a simple illustration can be transformed by adding texture and dimension. What starts as a basic sketch becomes something quite different once you begin experimenting with materials.

I particularly enjoy watching participants discover unexpected combinations, make little mistakes, change direction and find their own creative solutions along the way.

It's not about creating something technically perfect. It's about being curious, trying new things and enjoying the process of making.

And often, it's those unexpected creative decisions that make the finished artwork so interesting!

The dance studio has always been a sacred place for me.

It's where I think, experiment, question myself, get frustrated, find inspiration and occasionally discover something completely unexpected.

But I've also learnt that not every studio is the right space to create in.

For me, the environment makes a huge difference. The lighting, background noise, temperature, the feel of the floor, even the energy of the space can affect how I move, concentrate and connect with my creativity.

Sometimes I walk into a studio and everything just flows. Other times, I spend half the session trying to settle into the space before I can begin creating anything meaningful.

After so many years of dancing, I've become much more aware of how sensitive the creative process can be to our surroundings.

I also have a little ritual before I begin. I quietly ask the space to keep me safe from injury and to hold whatever creativity I'm about to bring into it.

It might sound a little strange, but for me, a studio is never just four walls and a floor.

It's a place where I leave a little bit of myself every time I dance.

Week two of our online Anime & Manga Drawing Series, and this time we were exploring the world of Kawaii animals!

We started by breaking down the basics, looking at different body shapes, head shapes, eyes and facial expressions, and how small changes can give a character its own personality.

Rather than simply copying a finished drawing, participants experimented with different elements before mixing and matching their favourites to create their own unique Kawaii animals.

It's always fun seeing how everyone interprets the same techniques differently. A few simple shapes can turn into so many different characters!

Another lovely Sunday spent drawing, experimenting and getting creative online.

I've been working on Continuum for the past few months, and it's exciting to see the pieces of it gradually coming together.

For those who haven't come across it yet, Continuum is a new platform celebrating choreographers aged 40+, creating opportunities for seasoned dance makers to explore ideas, revisit work, experiment and continue evolving their artistic practice.

I'm particularly excited to have a fantastic arts organisation supporting the project as we work towards our first iteration in 2027.

There's still plenty happening behind the scenes, and I can't wait to share more as things develop.

A dedicated website and Instagram account are also in the works, both launching soon, where you'll be able to follow the journey, meet artists and see how the project unfolds.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes!
