I’ve been itching to move again.

After spending so much time developing Fractured Echoes, I’ve had a bit of a break from being in the studio, and I think I needed it.

Sometimes stepping away from a work is just as important as working on it. It gives ideas time to settle, makes space for other things, and lets you come back without being quite so buried in what you thought the work needed to be.

Now I’m at that slightly awkward stage of knowing I’m ready to return, but still trying to muster the energy to actually get myself back into the studio.

The ideas are starting to creep back in though. I’m thinking about movement again. Hearing sections differently. Wondering what needs to change.

So I think that’s probably my cue.

Time to get moving again and see where the next stage of Fractured Echoes takes me.

We’re heading to Kingston Arts during the spring school holidays for a colourful morning of painting, decorating and getting creative.

In Tweet Retreat: Paint Your Own Birdhouse, kids will transform their own wooden birdhouse using acrylic paints, patterns and playful designs. Think flowers, bugs, rainbows, birds or whatever their imagination comes up with. And, of course, they’ll take their finished creation home.

Designed for ages 7–13, it’s beginner-friendly, relaxed and all materials are included.

📅 Tuesday 22 September
⏰ 10am–11.30am
📍 Kingston Arts Centre, Moorabbin
⚡ Limited tickets remaining. Link in bio to book.

Our community programs give kids the chance to try something creative, learn new skills and, most importantly, make something that feels like their own.

Some jump straight in. Some take a little longer to find their idea. Some completely surprise themselves with what they create. That’s part of what we love about working with young people, there’s never just one way to participate or be creative.

From visual arts and craft to dance, movement, writing, music and more, Rebel Stepz Arts works with councils, libraries, community organisations and youth programs to create engaging arts experiences for young people.

And we always love seeing a room like this: busy, focused and creating.

Join me for a beginner-friendly Spoken Word Workshop, exploring creative writing, storytelling, voice, movement and sound.

I’m Sheena Chundee, a Melbourne-based choreographer and Director of Rebel Stepz Arts, and this workshop gives you a little insight into the creative process behind my solo performance work, Fractured Echoes.

The work explores identity and the different versions of ourselves we carry, who we inherit, who we become around other people, the influence of outside noise and expectations, and what happens when we try to find our own voice amongst it all.

Those ideas will become our starting point for writing.

Using some of the same themes, prompts and soundscapes that have informed Fractured Echoes, we’ll experiment with turning thoughts, memories and fragments of ideas into spoken word.

We’ll explore what happens when we change how words are spoken using volume, pace breath and silence.

We’ll play with music, sound and simple movement to see how they can completely shift the feeling of a piece.

This isn’t about being a poet or performer. No previous experience is needed, and there’s no pressure to perform or share your work.
It’s a chance to experiment with some of the ways I create, while finding your own way of telling a story.

📍 Collingwood Library
📅 Saturday 14 November
⏰ 10am–12pm

Early bird tickets available for a limited time.

Join me at this year’s Be Bold Festival with Creative Brimbank!

I will be at the Bowery Theatre leading Dance Lab Live, a beginner-friendly session offering a little insight into how I create and develop movement as a choreographer.

I’ll be joined by live musician Ania Reynolds , and together we’ll explore the relationship between movement and live sound.

As a group, we’ll turn those words into movement, play with rhythm and tempo, experiment with being loud, quiet, sharp and flowing, and gradually build those ideas into a short piece.

There’s no need to be a dancer!

Saturday 3 October
4:30–5:00pm

On Monday we started the week by delivering a community drumming workshop, bringing people together for an afternoon of rhythm, learning and plenty of shared energy.

What I love about percussion workshops is that you don’t need any musical experience to take part. It starts with listening, finding the beat and learning a few simple techniques and before long, the whole room is creating something together.

These are the kinds of workshops we love delivering at Rebel Stepz Arts: accessible, social and genuinely fun, with everyone able to participate at their own level.

Thanks to the wonderful community group who welcomed us and to our wonderful instructor!

I’ve been quietly developing CONTINUUM, a new artist-led platform focused on dance artists aged 40+.

It’s grown from questions I keep coming back to:

Where are the opportunities for dancers and choreographers as we get older?

What happens to artists who step away and want to return?

Where are the spaces to experiment, take risks and make new work without age being treated as a limitation?

And perhaps most importantly, why aren’t we seeing more dancers and choreographers over 40 on our stages?

Continuum will begin to explore those questions in 2027.

The vision is to create a platform where artists 40+ can develop work, perform, experiment, connect and continue evolving their practice.

Not looking backwards.

Not trying to recreate younger versions of ourselves.

But recognising what artists bring now, different bodies, decades of experience, cultural practices, changing perspectives and a hell of a lot still to say.

I have big ambitions for where Continuum could eventually go: performances, creative development, workshops, conversations, residencies and opportunities that put longevity in dance firmly on the agenda.

But every platform has to start somewhere.

Ours starts in 2027.

More soon.

Boys need opportunities to experience movement beyond sport.

I’ve always loved taking dance into schools, particularly when working with groups of boys who may not have had much exposure to it before.

For some, walking into a dance session can come with preconceived ideas about what dance is, who it’s for, or even what they’re going to be asked to do.

Then they start moving.
Suddenly it’s physical, energetic, challenging and fun. They’re learning rhythm and coordination, working as a group, remembering movement, solving creative problems and discovering different ways their bodies can move.

Sport is fantastic, but it shouldn’t be the only environment where boys are encouraged to be physical.

Dance offers something different. It combines physicality with creativity, musicality, expression and imagination, and gives boys permission to explore all of those things without needing to score a goal or cross a finish line.

Serious about the work. Not always serious about myself.

For all the discipline, technique, rehearsals, deadlines and expectations that can come with working in the arts, I've always believed there needs to be room for play.

To try something because it feels interesting.

To make something that doesn't necessarily have a grand artistic statement attached to it.

To be a bit ridiculous.

Some of my best ideas have come when I've stopped worrying about whether something is "good" and simply allowed myself to experiment.

I think we sometimes forget that creativity is supposed to be enjoyable. Not everything needs to become a performance, a project, a funding application or an outcome.

Sometimes you can just put on a tutu, find a graffiti-covered wall and have some fun.

And apparently, I've been practising that philosophy for quite some time.

A little throwback to this session in New South Wales, where I logged in from Melbourne and suddenly found myself projected onto a very large screen in front of a room full of young creatives.

The mission: turn clay, paint and plenty of imagination into their own magical wands.

One of the things I love about live online delivery is that it allows us to take creative experiences almost anywhere.
The facilitator might be on a screen, but the making, conversations, laughter and connection are very much happening together in the room.

The kids sculpted, painted and personalised their wands, and, as always, we encouraged them to take the original idea and run with it. No two creations needed to look the same.

At Rebel Stepz Arts, accessibility has always been important to us. If we can't physically be in the room, we'll find another way to bring the creativity there.

Although seeing yourself projected several metres tall is something you never quite get used to.
