This year, we are proud to sponsor Cause for George, a fundraising event supporting the MND and Me Foundation.
This cause was inspired by George—a man I never had the chance to meet, yet through his family and the stories they’ve shared, his legacy continues to make a lasting impact. Below is the story they’ve offered to share about Barbi (our “slot car mum”). This is only a small piece of Mum’s journey, but it means a lot to be able to share it.
I would also like to thank everyone who visited Mum while she ran the track, and to those who shared stories, laughs, and memories there. The track isn’t going anywhere, and I hope to reopen it to the public on a regular basis 1 day soon. Please check out this event. Cause for George

“Mumma Slot Car – Barbie Bycroft
Slick 7 Raceway began in 2007 with my dad, Ken, turning a love for slot cars into a place where people could race, laugh, and belong. While Dad built the raceway and had the vision, it was Mum who quietly became its heart. I might have worked on the cars and the track, but Mum made sure everything else ran smoothly. She kept the place organised, cleaned, and welcoming — and she kept me on track too, especially when it came to finding things or putting them away.
I have always said every track needs a Barbie. Over the years, racers travelled from all over to visit Slick 7, and Mum adopted them all. Drivers became family, first timers became regulars, and before long she was known simply as “Slot Car Mum” — or, to me, Mumma Slot Car. She had a way of making everyone feel at home, whether they were chasing lap records or just stopping in for a chat.
When Dad passed in 2021, Mum kept the raceway going. The track became her social space, her routine, and her way of staying connected. She made sure Slick 7 remained a place where people felt welcome, included, and happy to be there. Mum had her first fall at the track in May 2024. At the time, we didn’t know it, but it was the first sign of MND taking hold. After recovering from the fall, she struggled to keep coming to the track. The diagnosis of ALS came last September, and in that moment, life changed.
Through it all, MND and Me has been there for our family, helping us navigate a disease no one is ever prepared for. Supporting Cause for George isn’t about recognition — it’s about giving back. Giving back to a community that supported us, and to an organisation that has helped make an incredibly difficult journey a little easier to walk.
If this story does anything, I hope it shows what Mum has always been about; care, kindness, and making space for others — at the track and in life.
