This is sugarcane country, heading north from Brandon, approaching Giru. The smoke would be a controlled bushland burn 🔥 and the paddocks are tiny compared to Mount Surround. It’s the end of the day and this community looses the winter sun sooner than the rest of us. It’s been a sweet winter, sweeter still is the crushing that will end in October. A rare event. Barring any natural disaster, our sugarcane will have a longer growing season. Here’s to the sun and the rain. May it pour down after the last train 🚂 parks up. To the mills, 💚

Do you ever have days when the simplest of things leave you feeling as flat as a s**t carter’s hat?

That’s OK.

It might just mean you’re a bit low on capacity today.

Not broken. Not failing. Not suddenly incapable of dealing with life. Just running a bit low in the tank.

So what can you do about it?

This is where I reckon we need to think about Capacity Before, During and After Crisis.

BEFORE CRISIS

This is where we build capacity while we've still got something in the tank.

Sleep. Eat properly. Move your body. Stay connected to your people. Have conversations. Do the things that give you a bit of joy. Know what your early warning signs are.

And probably most importantly, don't wait until you're drowning before you put your hand up.

Capacity is built in the ordinary days.

DURING CRISIS

When life does turn to s**t, sometimes the goal isn't to fix everything.

It's just to get through today.

Shrink the problem down. What's the next thing I need to do?

Not the next ten things. Just the next one.

Control what you can control. Let some things go. Accept help when it's offered. Talk to someone you trust. Eat something. Drink some water. Get outside. Breathe.

And give yourself permission to operate at less than 100%.

Because when you're carrying more, you've naturally got less capacity left for everything else.

AFTER CRISIS

This is the bit we sometimes forget.

Just because the crisis has passed doesn't mean your capacity magically returns.

Sometimes that's actually when the exhaustion catches up with you.

Recovery takes time.

Rest. Reconnect. Reflect on what you've been through. Get back to some routine. Do more of the things that refill your tank and less of the things that keep draining it.

And if you're struggling to get your capacity back, reach out and get some support.

I've learnt over the years that resilience isn't about being able to continually cop more s**t.

It's about understanding our own capacity.

Knowing what fills our tank.

Knowing what drains it.

Knowing the signs when we're getting low.

And knowing when we need someone else to help carry the load for a while.

So if today you're feeling as flat as a s**t carter's hat...

Maybe don't beat yourself up about it.

Ask yourself a different question.

What's one thing I can do today to put a little bit back in the tank?

That's Capacity Before Crisis.

And some days, a little bit is enough.

Sunsets, Saturdays & cane fires in the Burdekin. 🌅🔥

There’s something about a Burdekin sunset that never gets old. Golden skies, the familiar glow of cane fires on the horizon, and another Saturday winding down at the Queens.

Here’s to good company, cold drinks, and another beautiful evening in North Queensland. 🍻
