Lorraine was the very lucky winner this month and was able to select a plate out of 2 choices. She said she loved this one and I am pleased it is going to a good home.

“Dancers” was the theme for the workshop held on Saturday 15 August which was being held by myself (Denise).

For this workshop my intention was to paint several different “Dancers” with interesting borders, all in the penning technique. I have taken the outlines only from the internet and altered these as required. The rest are my own ideas and interpretations.

The 1st Dancer was really a lot of fun to do. The design is done using a pen and nib. I put the outline on the middle of the plate and masked up the borders on each side. I then mixed my paint using a medium and Pure Turps for thinning. It really took considerable time penning the Dancer on, then painting the Black line for the Border and then the panels. Fire to 800c.

2nd firing for this Dancer was to then paint her Head and Leg with Black and fire.
If needed darken where required. I was really happy how this looked when out of kiln.

The 2nd Dancer I penned on and penned the patterns in, I was not sure what type of border I wanted so I left that off and fired. Playing with ideas I decided on the curves as below and then divided the sides into panels. The lines were all taped up so I could put very small pen lines in black.
Next I penned in the patterns in the sections. Time was getting away so I did not finish both sides. And still need to do the second side.

The 3rd Dancer is resting after a big performance. She is painted in the same method as the other 2 Dancers. For her Earring, I painted Gold Underlay on 1st firing and Liquid Bright Gold 2nd firing. When all finished I glued “Emeralds” over the gold earring. The Emeralds are glass that I have, which I fired and made lovely round balls which are then glued on. When painting her head and arms with Black, I decided to paint every second panel in her skirt which looks really good.

She does not need a border. I just put a fine line of Black at the bottom of her skirt on the ended and fired.

Something to consider when using any design (or part of) from the internet. For this Dancer, the picture I used, the top half of her right arm was missing. And her left hand was almost 3 times what it should be. If something looks wrong don’t use that picture until you have worked out what it is that is that’s wrong or missing.
I am really happy with these pieces and will finish the second half of the 2nd dancer.

Porcelain Art Journey

Last month I posted a picture of my 1st plate that I painted on porcelain, which is of Single Open Roses.
Following that posting I have been asked if I can show from the beginning when I started painting on porcelain to now, in the same subject.

It is really interesting when you look yourself at where you began on this artistic journey to now. The 1st photo is my 1st plate, which I was really happy with at that time.

I have included a Ball Vase with long neck,which I painted a few years ago and still love and use.

Also included are photos of a large 13 1/2” vase I painted a few years ago, which I love. It is very hard to photograph due to the size of the circumference, height and glaze. Also attached is another plate showing a very different style, a lot of years between.

I hope you enjoy seeing the changes in painting styles, regardless of colour, porcelain and subject.

Continuing with our Show and Tell from yesterday’s Workshop.

The 1st plate is painted by Vivienne and is fabulous. Vivienne said she painted the Flowers and some fine line work where needed, but felt it needed something else. Vivienne then decided to ground the background with Black which really sets up the Flowers. To finish she has used Gold Underlay and etched a design into it and once fired covered with Liquid Bright Platinum. It really is fabulous.

The next 3 pieces have been been painted by me. I brought these to share, even though they have been shown previously but they really fitted into the theme of Penwork, and would not have been seen by some members.

The Rose plate was taken from Pinterest but shown by a couple of people, so I do not know who the original person was. When you start and really look into the design, you will find that the design is made up of continuous lines, that start at the top on the plate and go through the Rose to the bottom of the plate. So it is many continuous lines. I have changed various parts as I worked the plate. Definitely a challenging piece and very rewarding as well.

The Poppy plate was just to show different Penwork to enhance a subject, the Hold panel is Gold Underlay covered with Liquid Bright Gold and the Poppy is taken from photos I took of Poppies at a friends house. Lot of fun.

The Penguin is painted on a vase showing different Penwork, in the Background, panels with Gold Underlay covered with Dark Blue Lustre. The Pelicans are taken from my own photos I took of the Pelicans at San Remo, near Phillip Island, Victoria. And the Pelicans are penned on using Matt White. So much fun designing and painting this vase.

Continuing with our Show and a Tell from yesterday’s workshop.
Last weekend at Judy Seymour’s Studio, Jenny Power was the guest artist for a Sparrow workshop, which was fabulous.

Maureen and Judy have both finished their pieces. The square plate was painted by Maureen and the round plate by Judy. Both fabulous. It was really interesting as we all painted the same birds being, Mum, Dad & Baby, all on a little portion of branch, and all painted Blossom. But how you painted the Blossom was up to you. And you can see this creates beautiful individual artworks.

Next we have some artwork painted by Estrella. The Butterfly is really interesting. Estrella has been painting with a product called “Mica” which looks like a metallic paint. But when applied correctly and fired has a stunning sheen. You cannot see this in the photo unfortunately. The background is painted with Lustre, but I’d didn’t fire quite as Estrella wanted it, that lead to experimenting with different Textures, Lustres and Gold. The effect is stunning, particularly when you see it.

The Urn, Vases & Bottle are all painted by Estrella, the detail is exquisite, and it is surprising how long they can take to paint.

Following our Show and Tell yesterday, we have the following artwork painted by our members.

1st we have this lovely plate with Tulips, painted by Marnie. You can see that Marnie has included Penwork into her design, which adds a beautiful layer of interest.

Next we have the stunning plate painted by Ursula. This shows the various stages of the flower. Ursula mentioned she had problems with the Gold which is unusual. So she put some Gold Underlay on the border and then gold again. Looks fabulous.

Next we have beautiful Sam which was painted by Louisse. He is stunning. Look at all the detail. Unfortunately Louisse said that Sam is no longer with them.

Next we have this beautiful Poppy plate which has been painted by Val. Val is not able to attend workshops now, but Val and I paint together as much as possible, which we love. The design for the Poppy was on Pinterest with just pen lines and some red colour flooded over the lines.

Val decided this was interesting and painted the flowers using various patterns. After firing found it needed something else, so she penned some lines and patterns on the border of 2 panels. When fired it still needed a little more, we decided to add contrast colours of Purple and Yellow into the design. Looks fabulous and adds so much more to the design.

Morning all,
Yesterday we had our meeting with myself as the teaching artist. Our subject was Penwork, which is so much fun to do and it can be any subject you like. We also had a great show and a tell as well.

Hydrangeas were our subject last month with Judy Seymour and below we have stunning pieces finished to share.
1st we have Marnie’s beautiful plate with 2 Hydrangeas painted. The colours show how you can have multiple colours and shades on the one flower head.

Next we have Chris’s beautiful Hydrangea plate, in the Autumn tones with beautiful background details.

Next we have Judy’s plate painted with multiple coloured Hydrangeas, showing Purple, Pink and White. Stunning.

Next we have a large dish painted by Joanne. Joanne said as the dish was large, she wanted to be bold and painted big strong hydrangeas and she definitely achieved this. Unfortunately once fired she found that the glaze had become “Sugar coated”. This means it has pitted in the firing and is very rough like big sugar granules. Very disappointing but it didn’t break. Joanne is going to give it a good sanding to hopefully smooth it and use it.
Lastly I have included a photo of all the hydrangeas, all stunning.
