I’m happy to announce that my painting Under the Horizon has been selected for the 2026 John Leslie Art Prize Gippsland Art Gallery

The exhibition opening is on Friday 4th of September at 6pm.

Under the Horizon explores how we see and represent the Australian landscape in the present. The painting brings together imagery from old photo albums belonging to Martyn and his father, depicting landscapes from both Victoria and Western Australia.

The painting draws on familiar traditions of Australian landscape painting, including the expansive vista, rolling hills, sun-drenched landscapes and the isolated horseback traveller. These tropes have played a significant role in shaping how Australians understand themselves, acting as symbols of national identity. One still commonly encounters reproductions of paintings by Frederick McCubbin or Tom Roberts in the bourgeois Australian home.

By contrasting these tropes of Australian landscape painting with fragmented areas of sky and landscape, Under the Horizon disrupts an otherwise naturalistic representation. These interruptions, created through the materiality and collaged subjects, introduce a level of ambiguity that slows the viewer’s experience of the work. The viewer is encouraged to pause and consider the role of memory, cultural representation and the ways in which these shape how we understand and depict place.

My three-month residency at the Leipzig International Art Programme has come to an end, and what an incredible experience it was.

A huge thank you to Marina, Katalina and Anna at LIA, and to everyone I met along the way. I’m leaving with so many memorable studio visits, generous conversations, and influential exchanges about painting. LIA

A special thank you to my partner, Kelsey, for all the support throughout the residency and for joining me in Europe for the final few weeks.

This project was made possible through the Keith and Elisabeth Murdoch Travelling Fellowship via the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne.

I’m now back in Melbourne, adjusting to the cold but it’s lovely to be home. Here are a few photos from the trip.

One of my paintings currently on show at the LIA Summer Show “Den Wald vor lauter Bäumen nicht sehen” at Archiv Massive in the Spinnerei.

The exhibition is on until the 25th of July.

I’ve spent my residency in Leipzig exploring its many parks, observing bird species that were introduced to Australia during European colonisation. There is an uncanniness to this experience that has prompted me to reflect on the enduring legacy of introduced European species within the Australian landscape.

Through collage, subjects are brought together to create spaces that slip between the real and the artificial, the abstract and the figurative, the kitsch and the romantic, and the past and the present. These compositions invite viewers to consider the interconnected histories and ecologies they evoke, while reflecting on how the landscape might be represented today.

It’s been a busy first month of my residency in Leipzig, filled with painting and studio visits with artists and curators. I’ve been particularly drawn to the wildness of the parks around the city and have spent a lot of time exploring them.

It’s also been a pleasure to see so many works by some of my favourite painters from Saxony, including Neo Rauch, Matthias Weischer, and Caspar David Friedrich.

I’m excited to be heading back West for my upcoming solo exhibition ‘The Mirror’ at the Town Hall Gallery in Albany.

This new body of work draws directly on archival photographs from Albany’s whaling history. Once documents of labour and industry, these archival photographs now carry complex ecological and ethical associations.

I’ll be in the gallery for the opening on Friday 23 Jan at 6pm, and an artist talk on Saturday 24 at 10am.
