Came across a pile of one of the joke books I illustrated a while back they re-packaged while shopping today and reminded me I never got my sample copies from the publisher…

My Grade 12 Art teacher in 1976 once told me to stop outlining all of my drawings with a black pen line…
I finally stopped doing that a couple of years ago in about 2024 when I went digital.
But thought I’d give the black outline another go …doing it digitally (mimicking my old style on watercolour paper and pen and colour wash).. with these three blokes..

As an illustrator you get asked to draw all sorts of things…(well whatever the story says!)
In this case this Children’s Book was more of a technical drawing exercise with so many trucks ..tractors and machinery and lots of chrome and wheels to draw.

And after months of work now great to see the e-proof pdf files come through for the author and myself to check over from the graphic designer at the publishers with the text and titles put in place around the illustrations all ready to go to print.

Well there’s a whole drawing board full of finished pencil roughs (well photocopies of them)…for the next 28 page book to email off…
After approval from the publisher and the author it will be off into doing the very slow COLOUR.
With a tight deadline!

The first stage of a new Children’s Book completed.
The THUMBNAIL ROUGHS for all 28 pages plus the front and back cover.
This is where it all starts!
Next step..after approval…the detailed large pencil roughs.

Lots of fun (and hard work)

First pdf proofs back to look over from the publisher with the titles and text in place.
Just some bits to now add to the COVER to fill spaces after the designer shifted things…then it’s off to the printer I am told.
