Meet one of our Actors Maria Spataro who is also our Producer, Production Manager and Lighting Designer! Here's some insight into her thoughts on Theatre and Verbatim!

Why do you like theatre?
M: I think theatre is such a fantastic platform for story telling. I love a good movie or book but I find theatre holds so much more than what you can get from reading a book or watching on a screen. Especially what comes from the actors, they work so hard to bring so much truth to the story and the character which then sparks that little connection between actor and audience. I love to just look at life for what it is and people for who they are, and I think theatre is the perfect place to do that, whether sitting in the audience or as an actor nutting through the bolts of a character and a storyline - the dynamics, the emotions, everything!

M: What do you like about verbatim?
It’s straight from a real situation in a real persons life on to the page. I think that makes verbatim such a beautiful form of art. You can’t get any more real than that.

What is your favourite part about the production?
M: Seeing these interviews come to life through another. And that moment of sharing them with each other and our audience. I can't wait!

'That's What She Said' will be opening on the 14th of September at the Off Broadway Festival Hub! Less than a week!

MORE Australians go to art galleries each year than go to AFL and NRL games combined. The creative industries employ more people than agriculture, construction or mining.

So many theatre companies around Sydney have actively considered gender equality in their selection for their 2017 seasons. They are listening! We are (have been) ready (for so so long)!

Darlinghurst Theatre Company
"In 2016, Darlinghurst Theatre Company implemented a gender parity policy and is proud to announce that its 2017 season achieves gender parity in the employment of all artists including directors, writers, designers and performers."

A play about the organ donation that saved the life of veteran ABC journalist Mark Colvin is one of the new works in Belvoir's 2017 season.

Meet the Director! Deborah Joyce.
Keeping with the verbatim theme we've asked Deb a few questions about the show (that's opening in less than two weeks - no big deal). Hope you enjoy hearing her thoughts about what we've been working on for the last few months!

Who do you think will enjoy this performance?
D: Obviously I believe/hope that women enjoy the performance. Women in Theatre is such a prevalent issue at the moment and I think what’s so special about this piece is it really is ordinary women telling their ordinary stories…ordinary doesn’t make it sound too interesting but it really is something special and unique, and everyone has something important to say. But I don’t think it’s just limited to a female audience. Aren’t men always saying they want to know what’s going on in women’s’ heads? Well here’s their chance!

What has been your biggest obstacle during this journey?
D: There’s a lot of responsibility in putting a real person’s words on stage and I only hope that they are happy with the result. Staging such a text-heavy piece, that’s really all about the words, has also been a difficulty. I’m still working on that so we’ll see how it goes!

Through the process of collating verbatim interviews we came across almost identical views about some topics but also greatly contrasting ideas about others.

One of our most treasured moments was when two women, unknown to each other, were asked about inequality and replied almost identically.
