Annandale Galleries Director’s Bill and Anne Gregory opened Annandale Galleries in 1991, in what was a converted Masonic Hall.

The large space that the Galleries provide, stem from the building’s initial function, having originally been a Methodist church.

Galay Ga Dhuway - Husband and Wife
Showing until 10 October

This exhibition of three husband-wife duos foregrounds the distinct artistic achievements of each individual, while sensitively acknowledging their connection, and the role of balance played within Yolŋu partnerships.

Exhibiting artists:
Djambawa Marawili AM & Liyawaday Wirrpanda
Gunybi Ganambarr & Lamangirra Gumana
Garawan Wanambi & Manini Gumana
In association with Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka

"A person from the Yirritja half of reality (moiety) must marry someone from the Dhuwa side
[...]
Whilst Djambawa paints fire crocodiles and lightning, Liyawaday paints butterflies, floodplains and brolgas. Gunybi's metal works draw on the rippling patterns of water-goannas splashing within the spring fringed by rushes. Lamangirra focusses on the ragged chop of the wind- driven waves as they hit the shore of Grindall Bay. Garawan paints the artesian water spilling out of the memorial pole placed over the font at low tide. His wife Manini shares a fascination with pastel-toned ochre admixtures but in a different palette and with a completely different narrative."

NOW OPEN - WILLIAM KENTRIDGE and GUNYBI GANAMBARR

Annandale is proud to bring two displays to Sydney Contemporary representing three decades of collaboration.

William Kentridge began showing with Annnadale in the late 1990's with his graphic work consistently pushing the boundaries of traditional printmaking. In some cases single pieces require over 50 individually printed elements across dozens of techniques.

Of the many exhibitions we have hosted with Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre (Yirrkala NT) dating back to 1995, Gunybi Ganambarr has heavily featured as both an exhibiting artist and a powerful influence. The work on display comes from this year's Biennale of Sydney and Sulman Prize Art Gallery NSW as well as a newly produced work from reclaimed steel representing sacred Ŋaymil spring designs.

•

More Kentridge can be seen at the fair as part of Installation Contemporary, featuring major works Goat, Milk, and one of the newest bronzes from the studio, Sapling. Each act as an extension of Kentridge's iconic visual language, borrowing from history, theatre and memory. Despite their significant scale they effortlessly trace space like shadows in motion, slipping between the fixed the fleeting.

ART FAIR Gunybi Ganambarr Sydney Contemporary
Originator of the Found movement, Gunybi Ganambarr has had six solos at Annandale Galleries spanning over two decades. The Yolŋu artist, working from his remote hometown of Gängän, has produced some of the most groundbreaking work of his generation. Under Ganambarr’s hand, the mass and rigidity of reclaimed metal seemingly melts away, often representing reservoirs and springs of the Ŋaymil/Datiwuy clans.

Ganambarr’s work now resides in every major institution in the country, as well as international collections such as the Metropolian Museum of Art, New York. His awards include the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (2018), the Western Australian Indigenous Art Award (2011), and the Xstrata Coal Emerging Indigenous Artist Award (2008). In 2026 he was notably featured in the Biennale of Sydney at White Bay Power Station, and was a finalist in both Wynne and Sulman Prizes, Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Ganambarr's work will be on display with us at Booth A05, Carriageworks 3-6 September

ART FAIR - WILLIAM KENTRIDGE Sydney Contemporary

Large bronzes emerge like shadows in motion, tracing forms that shift in and out of coherence from each new vantage point. Elaborate prints seem to fall effortlessly into place, as leaves of the tree and leaves of the book combine to speak to us like prophets.

“He has given us sculpture that walks and falters, pauses and remembers. He has given us a landscape of metaphor, memory, and resonance”
- Clare Lilley, The Gravity of Form (for The Pull of Gravity, Yorkshire Sculpure Park)

The 10th Edition of Sydney Contemporary comes at the same time as Annandale celebrates our 35th Anniversary.

Final Days! If I Were a Cactus
We'll soon be saying farewell to our collaborative exhibition with Studio A artists Emily Crockford, Annette Galstaun, Daniel Kim, Meagan Pelham, Thom Roberts, Damian Showyin and Lex Tan.

Each artist has channelled an aspect of their daily lives, from suburban streets reimagined in heightened colour to birds painted like precious jewels. Finding beauty in the otherwise ordinary is more than visually captivating; it is an imperative for those who wish to authentically connect with the present.
Thanks to the entire studioA family for helping bring this joyful show to life, and for all the valuable work they do in Sydney and beyond.

'If I were a Cactus' will be open until Saturday 22 August 11am - 4pm.

Last Day to see Sara Oscar's The Mute & Counterfactual Departures

"They imagine photographs that were never taken, This begins with my mother's own migration story of leaving Thailand in the 1970s and extends to an exodus of Thai women who migrated to Western countries after the Vietnam War.

[...] these images are placeholders. I mean this as a tension rather than a solution. A placeholder creates a space for someone never admitted to history, but it also occupies that space: it produces a subject rather than a person. That distinction matters and names the risk of this work, which is the tension. In making images about these women (and admittedly, myself), I risk repeating photography's tendency
to create types, trivialising history, and being co-opted by the very systems I set out to question. These are systems whose harms, from data centres to ghost work, I cannot ignore and cannot prompt my way out of. The choice usually on offer is to opt out of these systems or be complicit in them. "
- Sara Oscar, exhibition text excerpt

Thank you to all visitors those who joined us on opening night for this wonderfully sensitive and captivating exhibition

OPENING Sara Oscar, The Mute & Counterfactual Departures
Opening night: Wednesday 15th July 6:30pm

Sara Oscar's recent photographic work uses machine learning to reclaim moments forever lost, notably the artist’s mother’s emigration story from Thailand in the 1970s. Oscar works within and against the visual language of documentary photography, with its familiar iconography and subjects shaped by a Western gaze.

Despite being artificially generated, it is telling that we read these photographs, the racial subjects depicted in them, the gestures of the feminine, as deeply embedded in the cosmology of photography as a way of seeing and being.

OPENING If I Were a Cactus, Studio A
Opening Night 15 July 6:30 - 8pm
Annandale Galleries

"I love colours so much, bright colours. I want people to feel colourful in their mind, in your body and in your dream"
- Emily Crockford, Studio A artist

Seven Studio A artists present everyday surroundings as a catalyst for constructing and communicating reality, in their own distinctive ways. Oscillating between the familiar and fantastical, landscapes become more than backdrops, domestic items become more than functional. We are invited to experience suburban streets reimagined in heightened colour, birds painted like precious jewels. In this way, finding beauty in the otherwise ordinary is more than visually captivating; it is an imperative for those who wish to authentically connect with the present.

'If I Were A Cactus' is made possible through collaboration with Studio A, a Sydney-based organisation dedicated to professionally empowering artists with intellectual disability and ensuring their voices are heard within contemporary Australian culture.
