THROWBACK THURSDAY
In an earlier post we listed the surnames of the first Mackay Community Theatre Management Committee and invited contributions to Kucom's 'living history' project.
One of those names rang a bell with long-time Kucom member Carolan Hill, who has shared with us some fond memories of her uncle, Mr J P (Jim) Lewola:

"Uncle Jim and Aunty Poss were entertainers here in Mackay in the ‘30s,’40s and ‘50s. They used to have concerts in the old Olympic Theatre where the car park on the corner of Gordon and Wood Streets is. The theatre was there when I was a young child. Aunty Poss taught dancing – ballet, jazz, and tap. My mother and sister learnt and were in the concerts.
Aunty Poss taught Betty Meskell and Lyn Denny much later.
Uncle Jim and his brother Stanley were what was called ‘soft shoe dancers’. Uncle Jim was in the Entertainment Regiment during WWII.
When Uncle Jim worked at Swift’s Meatworks in Gladstone, Aunty Poss continued to teach many dancers there and produced concerts. Both their daughters were dancers. When Uncle Jim retired to Oxley, Brisbane, Aunty Poss continued to teach dancing."

if you have a family member who was involved in the founding of Mackay Community Theatre, we’d love to hear from you. Just email to [email protected].

THROWBACK THURSDAY
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, it would be pretty hard to ignore the fact that we are heading for a landmark event next year. Our history is well documented, going back to the public meeting that was convened on 11 July 1947 in the Mackay Town Hall, ‘for the purpose of forming a dramatic society for Mackay’. But did you know that there has been an enthusiastic interest in live theatre in Mackay going back more than 150 years? Here is an extract from the Mackay Mercury and South Kennedy Advertiser, Saturday, 10 April 1875:

"On Thursday evening last a numerously attended meeting was held at Wills’ Hotel, for the purpose of establishing an Amateur Dramatic Club. Mr. G. Smith took the chair, and formal resolutions were put and passed, affirming the desirability of establishing a Dramatic Club for the purpose of giving periodical entertainments. A provisional committee … was appointed, to draw up, for the management of the club, rules to be submitted to a general meeting to be held at the same place on the 15th inst. A list of members willing to join was then made out, and a total of sixty-eight names of those who were either present, or who had signified their willingness to become members, was made out. We believe that the establishment of a Dramatic Club was a very happy thought, and that it will prove quite a success. It will be the means not only of affording amusement to the members and the public, but will materially assist the various charitable, and other public institutions of the district."

Thanks to the Mackay Historical Society for this and other press clippings.

THROWBACK THURSDAY
Well, look what just popped up in our feed!
Kucom Theatre has come a long way in the nine years since these photos were posted - and with a big anniversary coming up in 2027, there's plenty to get excited about.
To achieve 80 years of continuous operation as a regional community theatre is quite a challenge, and well worth celebrating.
The list of people who voted to create a community theatre at that first meeting on 11 July 1947 is an impressive one, containing names of families that are still well known in the area: Adams, Bagley, Barron, Bell, Best, Clark, Galletly, Kilpatrick, Lewola, McDonald, Miller, Morrison, Mulherin, Porteous, Rickard, Vaughan, and Wood.
Our 80th Anniversary Subcommittee is working towards establishing an online ‘living history’ of Mackay Community Theatre from its inception, so if your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts or uncles had any involvement in the establishment of Mackay Community Theatre, we’d love to hear from you.
Just message us, or send an email to: [email protected].
