Anindilyakwa Arts, Groote Eylandt Anindilyakwa Arts is a thriving hub of creativity located on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory. Arts & Entertainment

It is run by the Anindilyakwa Land Council and supports over 100 local Indigenous artists to promote and sell their artwork.

🖤🫶🏽 Black Line ~ Black Line is a dyeing technique that Warnumamalya artists have developed alongside artist Anna Reynolds
🫶🏽🖤 Using Maringmurnamurna (quinine) and a secret paste the artists can paint their stories onto garments creating intricate designs & one off pieces of wearable art 🫶🏽🖤 Each piece is hand painted in either the Angurugu or Umbakumba art centre & then washed in the Salt Waters of Groote Eylandt 🖤🫶🏽 Black Line was also incorporated into the Dadikwakwa~Kwa collection at this years Indigenous Fashion Projects Country to Couture 🫶🏽🖤 Anindilyakwa Arts are selling some Black Line silk garments at Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair 🫶🏽🖤 Come find us at Stall 15 xx

🐚🫶🏽🐚 Inspired by the Dadikwakwa-kwa (Doll Shells) the collection celebrates cultural renewal through a mix of traditional practice and contemporary fashion.

🐚🫶🏽🐚 Working alongside long-time collaborator Anna Reynolds the artists have combined bush dye, black line, digital print, shells and natural fibres to create the collection.

Anindilyakwa artists are renown for bark paintings with floating motifs on a background of manganese, painted in a distinctive dash style, which is uniquely special to Groote Eylandt.

Alice Durilla, one of the last dash painters, has passed this precise linework down to her daughter, Chelsea Lalara, ensuring the practice continues.

Lost or discarded fishing nets, known as ghost nets, wash up on pristine remote beaches across Groote Eylandt. These plastic nets cause significant environmental harm and damage precious ecosystems.

Working closely with the Anindilyakwa Land and Sea Rangers, the women have turned this environmental challenge into an opportunity for artistic expression. Repurposing ghost nets into striking contemporary woven works of art. These “new ways” artworks reflect a creative evolution of traditional practices.

Recently the ladies at Umbakumba Art Centre have been creating ghost net dolls, each with their own personality and story.

“The dollies drift around all over the Makarda, swimming, dancing, coming to the land. The ghost nets were found on the sand sleeping, waiting for someone to pick them up to take them to the rangers shed”, Sue Bara.

In just two weeks we will be back on Larrakia Country for the 20th anniversary of the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair!

Come visit us at the Darwin Convention Centre from the 6-9 August where we will be joined by 75 other Indigenous Art Centres from across the country. DAAF is free to attend from Friday to Sunday, with 100% of all art sales going directly back to the Art Centres, supporting artists and communities across Australia.

We are excited to share two exhibitions opening at on Friday 3rd July ✨

Yanindilyakwa - All of Us Together celebrates the cultural reawakening of Dadikwakwa-kwa (shell dolls), bringing together new works from across the Groote Archipelago.🐚

Alongside this, Chelsea Lalara - The Last Dash Paiinter’s Daughter honours the Eylandt’s most distinctive painting traditions. Taught by her mother, Alice Durilla, one of the last remaining Dash painters, and inspired by the legacy of her late father - renowned Dash painter A. Lalara, Chelsea continues this rare cultural practice while bringing her own contemporary voice to the tradition.✨
