Awelye (Women’s Ceremony) for Alpar (Rat-Tail Plant) by Rosemary Bird Mpetyane

This plant can be found in abundance throughout Rosemary’s Country, Ilkawerne. The long, green tendrils of the rat-tail plant are covered in shiny black seeds.

When ground into powder, the seeds can be used to make bread. If mixed with water or animal fat, they can be used for bush medicine.

Awelye ceremonies are performed to help encourage the constant growth of this plant so that it may support the community.

For many years, Rosemary painted this subject in a traditional style — using earthy tones, classical dot work and symbols.

More recently, she has favoured a contemporary style. Using bright colours and a free-flowing structure, Rosemary beautifully translates her heritage into a modern design.

Ahakeye (Bush Plum) and Little Wallaby by Gary Bird Mpetyane

The Ahakeye is a very important story for Gary that belongs to his Country, Ilkawerne (El-go-an-na). The ahakeye, called bush plum in English, is also known as the native currant or citrus.

This shrub produces small white flowers, deep green citrus-like leaves and the ahakeye, which are black when ripe and very small.

This fruit is favoured for its sweet taste and can be reconstituted in water if dry.

Rosemary paints Awelye (Women's Ceremonial and Body Paint Designs) for Alpar, the rat-tail goosefoot or green crumbweed plant. It is a small, erect herb that is sticky to touch and scented heavily of citrus.

Growing especially well in Mulga tree communities, it is found in abundance in Rosemary's home in the Utopia Region, north east of Alice Springs.

Anaty (Desert Yam) by Jeannie Mills Pwerle

Jeannie paints the Anaty story from her father's Country. This yam grows underground with its viny shrub growing above ground up to 1 metre high.

The anaty is a tuber, or swollen root, of the shrub and tastes much like the common sweet potato.

It can be eaten raw or cooked and is still a staple food for the Aboriginal people that can be harvested at any time of the year.
