Pronounced 'Iy-lenky-la' in Jilly's language, this creature is represented by the concentric circle designs.

She, Iy-lenky-la, is asleep in the centre and then unwinds herself around and around.

Iy-lenky-la is special to Jilly as the story belongs to the women of her country, Arawerre.

Pictured here are our Alice Springs gallery manager, Simone, with Utopia artist Dora Mpetyane, whose beautiful artwork is featured on the new display.

Dora’s artwork depicts My Mother’s Awelye (Women’s Ceremony) Story. We love how its bright colours stand out beautifully against the desert sky.

The linear designs in this artwork represent one of the oldest art forms in the world, Awelye.

If you’ll be visiting the Red Centre soon, we hope you’ll pop in to say hello and view Dora’s art up close.

Leaves by Gloria Tamerre Petyarre

One of the most prestigious styles in Australian art, Leaves won the Wynne Prize in 1999 and received a high commendation in 2004.

Gloria (1945-2021) first painted this original design in April 1994 at Mosquito Bore in Utopia.

Additionally, Gloria became the first Australian artist commissioned by Hermes, with her Leaves design featured on silk scarves for their 2009 Spring/Summer collection.

The other day, Magdeline Payne Ngale and her sister, Janella, came to see Magdeline’s exhibition on display in our Alice Springs gallery.

Magdeline has worked incredibly hard creating 25+ new artworks for this exhibition. We were so pleased to share the display with her and even more glad to hear her positive feedback on how it all came together.

Ahakeye II by Magdeline Payne Ngale is on display in both our Alice Springs and Darwin galleries until 31 October. We hope to see you soon for a visit!

Ahakeye (Bush Plum) Dreaming by Magdeline Payne Ngale

Ahakeye is an important bush food that is favoured for its sweet taste. You’ll know the berries are ready to eat when they appear black and shrivelled.

With patience and precision, Magdeline dutifully depicts this story in layered dot work. She begins each artwork by sketching an outline of the main shapes, before steadily building layer upon layer of multi-coloured dots.

Each completed piece is a beautiful, modern representation of traditional cultural knowledge.

This art style is featured in our current exhibition – Ahakeye II. The exhibition is on display in our galleries until 31 October. We hope to see you soon for a visit!
