For Aboriginal peoples, Country is more than a physical space; it is a spiritual connection to the living world – including the land, skies, waterways, wildlife, plants, and people.

Connection to Country is important as it provides a sense of belonging and uplifts the wellbeing of the community.

While every community has its own unique definition of Country, most of them share the understanding that Country is alive.

Our community is from the Utopia region of Central Australia. Within this region, there are many different Countries, which is why each of our artist profiles includes their specific Country.

We’ve gathered a selection of art from our community that celebrates and shows respect for Country. Artists featured here:

✨ Delvine Petyarre

✨ Selina Teece Pwerle

✨ Barbara Weir (dec.)

3 Generations of Bush Medicine: featuring Betty Morton Pwerle, Joycie Morton Petyarre & Nakita Inkamala.

While all three women paint Bush Medicine, each brings her own approach through colour, pattern, composition and technique.

Together, their works highlight both the strong cultural connection they share and the individual artistic voices that have developed across three generations of women.

This exhibition is on display at our Alice Springs and Darwin galleries until 30 June. We hope to see you soon for a visit 😊

For those who can’t make it in person, we also have an online exhibition which you can view on the website.

Anwekety (Conkerberry) by Glady Kemarre

Glady rarely painted anything other than the Anwekety Story, whereby fine dot work represents the sweet black conkerberry (anwekety in Glady's native language).

This fruit looks very similar to a plum and is often referred to in English by Glady as a 'bush plum'.

In the Dreamtime, winds blew from all directions, carrying the Anwekety seed over Glady's ancestors' land. The first Anwekety of the Dreamings then grew, bore fruit and dropped more seeds. Many winds blew the seeds all over the Dreaming lands.

Bush Medicine is an important cultural practice in Central Australia. Throughout history, the Aboriginal people have used the leaves, seeds and roots of native plants as medicines.

The knowledge of different plants is closely tied to Country as it depends which plants are easily accessible within each community.

Our current exhibition explores this important ritual through the work of 3 artists – Betty Morton Pwerle, Joycie Morton Petyarre and Nakita Inkamala.

The exhibition is on display at our Alice Springs and Darwin galleries until 30 June. We'd love to see you for a visit!

For those who can’t make it in person, we also have an online exhibition which you can view on the website.

From the depth of a waterhole to the expanse of a bright desert sky, blue is one of the most versatile colours in nature.

Deep shades of indigo bring a sense of strength and focus into a room, while softer blues invite a feeling of calm and tranquility.

Carrying the peaceful spirit of these natural elements, a blue artwork can beautifully transform the energy of your favourite spaces.
