Boomerang Art - Aboriginal Art Gallery An interesting welcoming place where you can view and buy original Australian Aboriginal Art.

Aboriginal art is part of a living tradition and is based on a culture going back some 40,000 years. Nothwithstanding the modern materials and new colours used by today's indigenous artists we still see ancient memories and tradition reflected in all of their creations. Please check our website for opening times or contact us directly by phone or email as our opening times vary.

Remembering Barney Campbell Tjakamarra (1928-2006) - a senior law man and elder, Barney earned the right to paint the Tingari Cycle stories. These song cycles or creation stories form part of the teachings of initiated youth and provide the basis for contemporary customs.
This is one of the last paintings he did in Boomerang Art Gallery in 2006, prior to passing away. I just took out of storage today and displayed it in our Alice springs Outback Gallery. Follow this link to view this painting completed. https://boomerangart.com.au/products/3541

Gloria Petyarre was a luminary in the world of Aboriginal art, her creations deeply rooted in the traditions and landscapes of her homeland, Utopia. Her artistic journey intertwined with the cultural narratives and familial ties that shaped her life. Renowned for her evocative depictions of "Bush Medicine Leaves," Gloria brought to light the intricate connections between art, ceremony, and the environment. To learn more about this famous late artist with an international reputation as one of the greatest Utopia Indigenous artists (died in 2021) you might want to view her Collection page https://boomerangart.com.au/collections/gloria-petyarre.

We celebrate a Utopia artist who created a limited number of amazing works of art in a short period of time and in our view the most significant and beautiful piece by this elderly Aboriginal artist who never experienced living in our modern world is on offer now.

Emily Pwerle was born c 1922 and shares the same country and languages with her sisters Galya, Molly and Minnie Pwerle. She also shares the same dreamings. As was the case with her sisters she started painting at workshops arranged by her niece, Barbara Weir, in 2004.

Emily, along with her sisters Galya and Molly, could not have had better teachers (Barbara, an international star and Minnie who was widely collected in Australia and overseas).

When Emily painted “Awelye Atnwengerrp (women’s ceremony), she employed a series of lines and symbols and often criss-crossed patterns. These are frequently laid one on top of another in colours that are expressive, colourful and dynamic. Her patterns originate in body design and were an integral part of ceremonies.

The nature of Emily’s paintings encapsulates the way of life of her family. She turned 100 already and can recall and produce notions of those early days and nights where ceremony was such an integral part of her life. This contact with a stone-age culture is rapidly diminishing but may still be made through the work of Emily and her sisters.

The artwork on offer was painted by Emily at her home in Utopia, about 250 km north/east of Alice Springs with materials being supplied to her by her niece the artist Barbara Weir. Werner, owner of Boomerang Art, supplied Art material to Emily Pwerle as well and bought this painting from her via her niece Barbara Weir.
This artwork https://boomerangart.com.au/products/3630 is in our view the most significant painting done by Emily Pwerle and we were lucky that it was sold to us to be included into our 30 year collection.

2 weeks ago we completed our new 200 square meter Gallery and featured there artworks by Barbara Weir who passed away in January 2023. Barbara was a regular visitor in our Art Gallery when she was around in Alice Springs and not somewhere overseas in Japan or the US. She was one of the most widely travelled indigenous Artists and one of the strongest advocates for Utopia artists. She made sure that not only her mother Minnie Pwerle and her children were involved and promoted, but also her wider family, Emily, Galya and Molly Pwerle and their relatives and her grandchildren. Without Barbara's tireless support, we most likely would not know about those artists.

Barbara's paintings can be found in many major public and private collections around the world and to mark the opening of our new Gallery Space we make available 5 of her paintings at a fraction of usual gallery prices.
