Tjanpi Desert Weavers

Tjanpi Desert Weavers Social Enterprise for Indigenous women from the NPY central desert region

Tjanpi Desert Weavers is a not-for-profit Indigenous social enterprise of Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women's Council. Out of a need for meaningful and appropriate employment, NPY members created Tjanpi to enable women on the lands to earn a regular income from selling their fibre art. Tjanpi (meaning โ€˜grassโ€™) supports the production and marketing of baskets, sculptures and

seed jewellery made by over 400 artists from 28 remote communities across three states - WA, NT and SA.

Sunshine and echidnas in Mimili community ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿฆ”

Pitjantjatjara artist Betty Campbell with her tjilkamarta (echidna) sculpture made during a Tjanpi skills and development workshop held in recent weeks.

Betty is a patient weaver with a beautiful, expressive style โ€“ much like her canvas paintings. She is a vibrant and animated participant at Tjanpi workshops - bringing joy through song (and sometimes even dance) while she stitches and weaves away.

Palya! As the end of financial year approaches, we're calling on you (or your business!) to make great art happen across the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands.โ  ๐ŸŒพ
โ
The huge costs involved in operating our social enterprise in communities scattered across 350,000 square kilometres of Country, means we cannot rely on artwork sales alone to keep the boat afloat.โ
โ
A donation of $150 provides fuel for a grass collecting trip on Country - an important aspect of Tjanpi's operations. Minyma (women) travel together to remote areas to gather native grasses which will later be used in woven artworks. These trips also support cultural maintenance activities, allowing artists to visit sacred sites, share inma (traditional song and dance) and dreaming stories to one another and kungkas (young girls) from their community. ๐Ÿš—โ˜€๏ธโ
โ
All donations over $2 are tax deductible. โ
