I have no idea what coloured pencils I was using 21 years ago, but it’s probably a safe bet I’d had them since school 🤔
It’s not only the quality of the pencils and paper that’s important, it’s also thousands of hours of practice!
Buy the best you can afford but also pick them up and use them 😀

Well this drawing has taken a while 🤦‍♀️
I began drawing it a couple of years ago (and those of you who have done some of my coloured pencil workshops may have seen it in progress 😬). I set myself the challenge of replicating the texture of the rocks and clay soil, which I hadn’t tried before. Then of course there’s the water captured inside the leaf.

I hadn’t tried this before and had to keep picking it up and putting it down.

This pair of Ravens is coming along nicely. The stippled branch is taking a while but I’m enjoying the process. I’ve been juggling between this piece, some experimenting with watercolour, workshops in coloured pencils, graphite pencils, ink as well as a ‘welcome back’ workshop and an artist talk!

Here’s a before and after pic for you 👀
Eighteen and a half years ago I tried out my new Derwent pencils and then put them back in the box for a further seven years 🤦‍♀️
It’s amazing the difference a few techniques and thousands of hours practice makes!
