Our 20th festival starts tomorrow!

This is some of our beautiful and friendly WAM fam, our volunteers and festival director Aimee Chan, who cannot wait to welcome to you our 20th Write Around the Murray.

For the next 5 days we have author talks, book launches, live music, film, photography, workshops, the WAM poetry slam and so much more at sites all across Albury Wodonga.

Join us at 11am at the Albury LibraryMuseum for the official launch with authors Carly Findlay and Adrian Beck. Many events are free but most do require pre-booking.

Spend Friday evening at Write Around the Murray with our specially curated panels of creatives, thinking about the importance of our past and where things are headed into the future.

At 6pm it starts with Past Lives, a talk all about historical fiction with authors Debra Oswald, Francesca de Tores and Joanna Nell.

Then at 7.15pm is Controlling the Narrative where Carly Findlay, Claire Coleman, Susanne Gervay and Will Kostakis will gather to discuss censorship and who controls the narrative in our creative and cultural landscape.

Both events are this Friday 11 September at the Albury LibraryMuseum and available as part of the WAM Festival Pass ($75/$40) or you can purchase tickets to individual sessions ($25/$15).

Wine, drinks and snacks will be available for purchase thanks to Vin Bar.

This is internationally award winning author Eleanor Pearson at ABC Goulburn Murray studios talking about Write Around the Murray which starts on WEDNESDAY!

In two sleeps, El will be on stage with Tania Ingram and Lucinda Gifford talking about the process for creating a picture book and the specific collaborative partnership of authors and illustrators. Tickets are still available on our website.

Come listen to the latest picture book releases and maybe some live music too from creators Tanis Ingram, Lucinda Gifford, Julianne Negri and Mitch Tambo.

If you fancy yourself a bit of a comedian, it’s time to put your powers to the test. Actor and comedian Nick Steain returns to Albury Wodonga to host a very special 2-hour workshop to help you get underway with crafting your very own stand up script.

Through a series of targeted exercises, you’ll learn how to generate sharper jokes, heighten your comedic instincts and unlock more creative ideas on the page.

Half of Australian household have at least one dog as their family pet, says Animal Medicines Australia. Why are canines our most popular animal? And why do we have such a strong affinity to them?

Come along to Regent Cinemas for a very special rescreening of the Red Dog movie, followed by an author talk with media personality Andrew Daddo.

As well as his appearances on The Great Outdoors, ABC Radio and the Mamamia podcast network, Andrew is a prolific author and just released two new books to his series about Bitza the dog.

After the movie, Andrew will chat with Luke McClounan all about his new books and why we love our dogs so much.

The Red Dog rescreening is on Thursday 10 September at 6pm. Tickets are only $15 and include the talk with Andrew Daddo. Andrew's books will also be available for purchase at the event.

Next weekend we are hosting a series of author talks about all different kinds of books and writing. From audio books to poetry, historical fiction to humour, there are 6 panel events for you to choose from.

(Or don’t choose – come along to everything!)

SATURDAY 12 SEPTEMBER
11am The Art of A.I. – all about the exhibition Doubling Down by Arlo Mountford which provides a commentary on artificial intelligence and its role in our collective consciousness. This event is at MAMA and moderated by Rhett Davis; it is free (registrations encouraged).

2.45pm All About Poetry – a talk that explores verse novels, black out poetry and more featuring Julianne Negri, Francesca de Tores, Johanna Bell and Claire Coleman.

4pm Books for the Ears: The Art of Writing Audio Books – featuring authors Gabriel Bergmoser and Anna Snoekstra who have both published books exclusively for Audible. Moderated by Gabrielle Tozer.

SUNDAY 13 SEPTEMBER
11am A Celebration of Life (and Death) – join authors Debra Oswald and Joanna Nell to discuss how they find the funny in aging and mortality in their novels. Moderated by Heather Rose.

1pm Criminal Acts: A Conversation About Crime Fiction with Jack Heath, Amy Doak and Anna Snoekstra.

2.30pm The Book of the Festival – a celebration of A Great Act of Love with author Heather Rose, interviewed by Jason Steger.

All these events are covered by the WAM Festival Pass ($75/$40) or can be purchased individually ($25/$15) and will be at the Albury LibraryMuseum (with the exception of The Art of A.I. which is free and will be held at MAMA).

FREE ICE CREAM AT WRITE AROUND THE MURRAY!!!

Next week our brilliant friends at Monumental Ice Cream will be making a limited edition flavour strawberries and cream to help us celebrate 20 Write Around the Murray festivals as well as our very special all-abilities tennis event, WAMbledon.

We will be giving away FREE ICE CREAM CUPS with the strawberries and cream flavour at WAMbledon at Wodonga Tennis Centre on Sunday 13 September. The event starts at 11am and freebies will be limited, so don't be late!

Strawberries and cream ice cream will only be available next week during Write Around the Murray (9 to 13 September). It can be purchased at Monumental stores and at WAM4Kids at the Albury LibraryMuseum on Saturday 12 September from 9.30am to 11.30am.

This is the Stereo Stories band (plus WAM Festival Director Aimee Chan) who has been a festival stalwart at Write Around the Murray Saturday evening event for multiple years. This year we are changing things up a little but DON'T WORRY! Stereo Stories will still be here, performing some old favourites as well as some brand new pieces.

In fact, the Saturday evening show is EVEN BIGGER this year as we will be programming a showcase of performers to celebrate our 20th festival. It's a combination of new talent as well as returnees to the WAM stage bringing songs, poetry, comedy and more.

Joining Stereo Stories at the WAM 20th Festival Celebration Showcase are Mitch Tambo, Racheal Oak Butler, Claire Coleman, Nick Steain, Rhett Davis, Dianne Wolfer, Mabelle Strauss, Nyima McMillan and Aimee Chan.

Tickets are strictly limited. The showcase is at 7pm on Saturday 12 September (NEXT WEEK!) at the Albury LibraryMuseum. Bookings via our website.

Congratulations to all the novels long listed for the ARA Historical Novel Prize, especially our two WAM 2026 authors Heather Rose and Francesca de Tores.
