Telling Kiama’s Story — One Carving at a Time
Old Fire Station in Kiama Exhibition
June 12th to 18th
A group of passionate woodcarvers has come together to tell the rich and rugged story of Kiama — not with words, but with chisels and gouges. Through six hand-carved relief plaques, we’re capturing the defining chapters of this coastal town’s history in timber. From the echo of axes in the towering cedar forests to the clink of picks in the basalt quarries, each plaque brings to life a moment that shaped Kiama.
The series begins with the early cedar cutters, carving paths through dense rainforest in search of the “red gold.” Next, we chip away at the legacy of basalt quarrying — the stone that paved cities and built livelihoods. Dairy farming follows, showcasing the green hills and hardworking hands that filled milk cans and community bellies alike. Fishing — both a necessity and a way of life — features in another panel, while tourism brings a splash of sun and surf, celebrating the Kiama Blowhole and beach holidays of generations past. Finally, we honour Kiama’s heritage buildings, each with its own story etched in stone and now, in wood.
Together, these plaques form a tactile tribute — a history lesson you can run your fingers over. Whether you're a local or just passing through, we hope these carvings spark curiosity, conversation, and a fresh appreciation for the stories beneath your feet.
