Gasworks Creative Precinct Gasworks is distinct in its commitment to multiple art forms – visual art, theatre, comedy, circus, cabaret, dance, live music, and family programming.

Gasworks is a home for creativity: a vital precinct where people gather for connection, belonging, and to experience the transformative power of art, nature, and culture. Located in Albert Park on the former South Melbourne Gas Plant site, Gasworks combines four hectares of parkland with two galleries, two theatres, artist studios, workshops, function spaces, and a café. Each year, over 100,000 community members engage with creativity through 200 performing arts events, 30 visual art exhibitions, 15 artist studios, 12 farmers’ markets, over 300 classes and workshops, professional development pathways, access to spaces, and family and school holiday programs. It is also distinct in its support for sector development, providing pathways from entry-level to professional practice.

OPEN STUDIO: The Scorpion's Tale | Oct 26 | 6-7 PM

Seasoned thespians Saara and Rupert are about to embark on another play season together and rehearsals start tonight. But a surprise appearance by the writer of the new play is cause for concern given director Casper’s penchant for unauthorised rewrites. When Casper suddenly falls victim to a dramatic offstage accident, can the actors figure out whodunnit?

This clever and hilarious play is presented as a rehearsed reading for Baggage Productions’ Project Draft V2 initiative.

We sat down with David Williams, the creator and performer of SMALLER to talk about the show, what inspired it, and what he hopes audiences take away from it.

From the ideas behind the production to the thoughts and conversations he hopes it sparks, here’s a little more about the story behind SMALLER and what stays with you long after the show ends.

SMALLER is an production.

This production was co-commissioned by Gasworks Creative Precinct, Burrinja Cultural Centre and City of Kingston, through the Small Gems Consortium. The development of SMALLER was proudly supported by Kingston Arts through the Magnify: Performing Arts Development, and by Darebin Arts through the Darebin Arts Speakeasy Spare Room program. A work-in progress version of SMALLER was commissioned by Take Over! 2020, a partnership between Arts Centre Melbourne & Melbourne Fringe.

Today is AusArt Day - a national day of giving that celebrates the power of the arts.

For 40 years, Gasworks has been a home for creativity, and our resident artists have been at the heart of our precinct.

SMALLER is a deeply personal story from theatre maker David Williams. It follows accidents, choices and serendipitous moments across three generations, and the tiny things that echo for a lifetime.

Family history, migration stories, the science of DNA, and the experience of parenting a child with an invisible disability. It’s a show about big things that are too small to be seen.

The Foyer Gallery, a high-traffic space that's ideal for group shows and wall works.

Over 100,000 people engage with Gasworks each year, so your work will be seen by a wide and diverse audience. We welcome solo artists and groups, emerging through to established, working across painting, sculpture, video, installation, performance, photography, and multi-media. Block Party | Jina He with Harris Kwong | SCREENWORKS | Oct 12 - Nov 1

Block Party is an animated moving-image work that reimagines Melbourne’s Lonsdale Street legal district as a playable urban panorama. Developed in collaboration with Harris Kwong, the work responds to the unusual spatial relationship among law courts, police, legal offices and nearby adult services.

Jina He () is a multidisciplinary artist, designer, and registered architect based in Melbourne. Her work spans public art, architecture, placemaking, animation, projection, light installations, and participatory urban experiences. She explores how civic spaces embody memory, identity, movement, and social tension, often employing playful visual systems, reflective surfaces, language, sound, and digital media to transform perceptions of the built environment.

David Williams' exquisite one-person show Smaller is next up in our Spring Season.

David just returned from Canada touring his previous show, Sincere Apologies, which was the hit of last year’s Melbourne Fringe. Before we welcome the world premiere of his next work, Smaller, we thought we’d look back at David William’s 25-year body of work, which Creative Director Sam Strong describes as “some of the most though-provoking theatre in Australia”.
