Catron Trio Live | Live Music | June 22

Catron Trio is the project of Leo Laddin-Catron, Charlie Smith and Max Ingles, playing and creating music that resonates with each member. The trio aims to create a rich sound leaning into modern jazz with the bones of traditional jazz, focusing on dynamics and tension through their music. The night will have specific features of horn players, an intimate trio setting and tunes never heard live before, to promote the recording of their debut album, “3 Seasons”.

In Conversation: Hannah Richell | July 14

Sorrento Writers Festival, Gasworks and Avenue Bookstore are delighted to be hosting a special “in conversation” with Hannah Richell and Festival Director Corrie Perkin.

“It’s an ordinary Wednesday afternoon in Sydney, the first week of July, when two police officers dressed in plain clothes knock at our front door.”

'An Ocean and a Day' is being hailed as a defining work on modern grief. It has drawn comparisons to Joan Didion’s seminal book The Year of Magical Thinking. Says journalist, author and podcaster Leigh Sales: “Hannah Richell writes beautifully about the fragility of life, it’s ability to devastate in an instant, but also the miraculous hope and joy that somehow still show up.”

Back Home, In the Water | SCREENWORKS | By Savi Ross | May 18 - June 21

Reflecting on a childhood memory of a waterfall in Gimuy on Djabugay Country, the video explores memory, belonging, and the idea of multiple "homes" through the sensory experience of water, landscape, and shared human presence.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Savi Ross is an African American, Torres Strait Islander artist, excited by digital illustration, creative storytelling, and Black joy. Savi was born and raised in Gimuy (Cairns) and now lives and works on Wurundjeri Country in Narrm (Melbourne). Savi’s work is often inspired by these places; the hugging mountains of Cairns and slow life as a young person in the 2000s; and the vibrancy of Naarm—two places that are in many ways different and sometimes similar. Often Savi’s illustrations are expressed through printed materials, to think about what community means; our public vs private lives; and the complexities of family, bodies, and intimacy.

This work was originally commissioned by Blindside Gallery through the Screen Series program – curated by Solid Lines with Agency Projects.
