We're excited about this part of the program 📖 🌊

Stories by the Sea is a relaxed, free community celebration of books, creativity, and connection — and it's the perfect way to close out the 2026 Whitsundays Writers Festival.

Browse and buy from more than 20 featured regional authors, or bring along up to two well-loved books to swap and send on a new adventure. Think of all the shelf space you'll free up. 😄

Kids get their own special storytime and book swap, there's live music woven through the afternoon, local writing groups and book clubs to connect with, and a gold coin BBQ to keep you fuelled.

The afternoon wraps up with a sneak peek at the 2027 program and prize giveaways — so you'll want to stay right to the end.

It's winter and even in the Whitsundays it sometimes gets chilly (sub 20 degrees 😂) so we're on the hunt for a nice list of comfort reads. What's your go to comfort read?

We also wish that when we read these comfort reads the set up looks like this picture. What it really looks like is a (wonky) hand croquet blanket chucked on the couch and a cup of tea in an old favourite mug (tea cups just aren't big enough!)

This September, three brilliant regional authors are pulling back the curtain on the creative process in one of our most anticipated sessions of the 2026 festival.

Where Do You Get Your Story Ideas From? brings together children's and personal development author Krissy Regan - The Wellness Poet, award-winning adventure memoirist Gary Wood - Digital Swaggie, and Banjo Prize-winning crime writer Veronica Lando Author — for an afternoon of honest, surprising, and deeply relatable conversation about where stories begin.

Whether you're a lifelong reader or an aspiring writer, this one's for you.
