Last night we made the decision to cancel the season of How to Kill Your Hamster. This decision was made in order to keep our audiences and cast safe during the recent COVID outbreak.

For those of you who've already bought tickets:
You will receive an email outlining how to get a refund. If in lieu of a refund you would like to donate the cost of your ticket to the artists in the show who have lost work you are also able to do that. Please be aware that most of the ticketing team are volunteers and are doing their best to respond as quickly as possible.

The entire team at Hamster and Rumpus have loved sharing this show with you, for those of you who did get a chance to see it we hope you had a blast.

Until next time,

stay safe and take care
xo Annabel & Eliza

This woman is the very best. Come and see her beautiful work! How to Kill Your Hamster opens tonight!!!

We asked Olivia, our fabulous designer, a few questions ahead of opening night!

What's your favourite design element of this show and why?
I’m always very concept driven so to be honest my favourite part is reflecting the reality of living with a bunch of different people. You end up with this hodge podge of items that aesthetically shouldn’t really go together. There are always too many pillows and too many throws and there are always things left behind from an activity that you were not privy too. There have been some really nice costume moments, I won’t spoil them but it’s very satisfying when a character becomes a person.

Do you have a dog? Tell us about it.
I have a Spoodle named Lou. She’s almost 10 years old now, and currently does a lot of sleeping even though she was the most loving terror for the first 8 years of her life. If I can settle into middle age the same way she did, I will be very satisfied.

What are you doing when you're not working?
Puzzles (I acquired 6 or so during iso and my collection is growing, I can’t stop), and cooking long meals. Cooking is my safe space.

How To Kill Your Hamster opens tonight! ✨

The carefree, Tae Kwon Do-ing eleven-year-old we all want to be, Arran Beattie is ten kilos of fun in a five kilo bag as Kitty. WE PREVIEW TONIGHT!

Arran Beattie worked in theatre, film and television in Scotland with The BBC, UK Theatre School at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, RedSnappa and performed in Scottish Opera’s nationwide tour of Falstaff before migrating to Australia in 2013.

Arran’s latest projects include writing and performing in ActNow and State Theatre SA’s web series Decameron 2.0. He also performs the award-winning drag character “Marion Westfield” with Haus of Kong.

Here, Arran tells us about the unapologetically confident, unafraid role of Kitty, which cult-classics are on repeat and his love of dogs. How great are dogs?

Kitty is boldly unfiltered and her quick wit keeps the adults around her on their toes. I WISH that I was as brave and passionate as her when I was a kid. And also as an adult.

I've got a lot of projects keeping me busy right now, so to unwind I'll rewatch some of my favourite movies like The Birdcage, Rocky Horror, Clue or Heathers for the gazillionth time.

I'm a total dog person. We had a family dog in Scotland, but tragically had to give her up before moving here seven years ago, and then we got another here in Adelaide. Both were brought into my life by my mum's complete lack of impulse control. Not mad about it.

The flashy hound from Flushing, Ashton Malcolm is ICONIC as Fran Fine the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. BOOK YOUR TICKETS

Ashton Malcolm is a theatre-maker, devisor and performance artist who has worked with Patch Theatre Company, Restless Dance, Windmill Theatre Company, Tiny Bricks and Brink Productions, Vitalstatistix and State Theatre Company SA. She often collaborates with Meg Wilson and Josephine Fitzgerald.

Here, she tells a little about her role playing a domestic dog called Fran Fine, what she does when she’s not working and a lingerie thieving pooch.

I love that Fran Fine knows how to stand up for herself.

October was pumpkin season, I’ve been playing Animal Crossing.

My sister had an amazing toy moodle called Halifax Maple. She was a beautiful weirdo who loved to collect leaves, steal any bras left lying on bedroom floors and cuddle on the couch. Being her auntie was the best thing ever.

Your best friend and the girl of our dreams, Maggie Aylett is beautiful as Miranda in How to Kill Your Hamster. BOOK NOW xoxo

Maggie Aylett is an emerging artist, and Hamster is her first foray into professional theatre, having recently graduated from a Bachelor of Creative Arts: Drama. She wrote and performed her own work with ActNow and State Theatre Company of South Australia’s recent digital theatre project, Decameron 2.0. Her drag king character is the rambunctious and charming Thomas Angel.

Here, Maggie tells us all about the lovely Miranda, multi-tasking while watching Netflix and reveals that she quite possibly had the best named first dog, ever. She should be so lucky.

Miranda is the best friend you need, loyal to a fault and always ready with a smile. I love her because she has so much love to give.

I’ve recently taught myself to sew! When I’m not working I usually have the newest Netflix series on while I swear at my sewing machine in a desperate attempt to make something wearable!

My first dog’s name was Kylie Minogue. She was a tiny little miniature fox terrier. I currently have three cats named Zuko, Azula and Hamilton and they are my everything! I love them even when they throw up on my carpet.

Perfectly Pastel, here to cleanse your aura, Shabana Azeez is HILARIOUS as Hamster-mum Carrie.

Perfectly Pastel, here to cleanse your aura, Shabana Azeez is HILARIOUS as Hamster-mum Carrie.

Shabana Azeez’s credits include TV guest roles in ABC’s The Letdown and Why Are You Like This?, SBS’s The Hunting, and Channel 9’s Metrosexual. She co-won Best Female Actor at Tropfest in 2019. She was a 2019 Raw Comedy South Australian State Finalist with her comedy band The Coconuts
Here, she tells us a bit about her character, Carrie, what she’s watching and her first “pet”.

Carrie lacks self awareness in almost every way. She never notices people’s reactions to her.

I’m watching Schitt’s Creek for the first time ever! I’m so late to the party it’s almost embarrassing.

This sounds so depressing but I’ve never had a pet! Eddie (who plays Ham the Hamster) is the best first pet a girl could ask for.
