A collage tattoo should not look like unrelated stickers placed beside each other.

For this Dandadan piece, repeated red, black and green elements connect the different characters and scenes. Variation in scale gives the eye a clear order instead of asking every detail to compete equally.

Good references matter, but composition is what turns them into one tattoo.

Skater girl detail from the upper section of the forearm tattoo.

The red eye accents, black hair and lighter facial values keep the expression clear against the rougher red-and-black marks surrounding it.

In a busy graphic style, the face still needs a quieter area to remain readable.

A long forearm design needs movement from top to bottom.

Here, the largest saucer section anchors the upper arm, the central ships move diagonally through the nebula, and the smaller ship closes the composition near the wrist.

Changing scale creates depth and stops repeated subjects from feeling static.

Rei Ayanami with a different visual treatment.

This Evangelion thigh tattoo combines anime character work with a mask, waves, clouds and lotus imagery to build a complete vertical piece rather than a standalone portrait.

Would you keep an Evangelion tattoo close to the original design, or take it in a new direction?

Fresh and healed tattoo photographs serve different purposes.

This fresh Sister of Battle image shows the colour and finish immediately after the appointment. The healed photographs show how the same design settles once the redness and surface shine are gone.

Both belong in a tattoo portfolio, but healed work is the more useful long-term reference.

Why the calf works for full-figure anime tattoos:

It provides a long vertical area, the design can be viewed clearly from the side, and there is enough room to separate the face, torso, hands and legs without compressing the character.

The placement should support the composition rather than force it into the wrong shape.

Major Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell, reworked as a full-colour anime pin-up.

The long calf placement gave the full figure enough room to remain readable, while the bright pink brushwork creates separation without crowding the character.

Enterprise-D. Voyager. One forearm.

This Star Trek piece uses layered ship sizes and a continuous nebula to create depth across the placement.

Which Star Trek ship would have to be included in your version?

Colour realism does not always need a photographic subject.

For science-fiction designs, recognisable shapes, controlled values and atmospheric colour can create a realistic result while still allowing the background to remain expressive.

The ships carry the structure; the nebula carries the movement.
