LOVING this 8x10" Tintype (cropped for socials conformity) we did of the wonderful Miriam Slater to celebrate their 30th birthday! They came all the way from Canberra* to our Adelaide Hills studio & darkroom to have a Tintype experience. The first image here is the pose and vibe they wanted - they told us a fantastic story about a portrait they had seen that really impressed them, and how it inspired this venture for them to get their own portrait taken. The second image is our test plate, taken to test our lighting and exposure. The cool confidence and composure of their actual portrait is streets ahead as a portrait, and it reminds us that whilst Tintype portraiture is so caught up in the technical process of the medium, ultimately the moment itself (and the thoughts and feelings that are captured) is what is important, as with any portrait. They wrote to us recently saying "I had a fantastic time! Would honestly recommend it for anyone wanting to commemorate a special time or moment in their life. The fact that I could be a part of the whole process too was very special." Thanks so much Miriam for being adventurous, authentic, and so incredible to work with.

* Actually Miriam was going to be in Adelaide anyway, but we couldn't not exploit how good it sounds that they came all this way just for us ;)

The darkroom is set up for the upcoming series of Spring workshops for 2 in B&W Film Processing & Printing. There are 2 printing stations, and all the required film, equipment & chemicals included. If you've always been curious about B&W analogue photography, or need a refresher - or just need a new experience as a treat (or a gift for someone special), get in touch or book one of the scheduled Film Friday workshops. We are set up for 35mm but can also accommodate medium format. This is such a fun and interesting day but be warned - it's pretty intense as we need to cram it all in - so make sure you're ready for this! These workshops are based in the historic town of Macclesfield in the Adelaide Hills. Enjoy lunch at the fantastic local store, and optional well-deserved drinks afterwards at the oldest pub in the Adelaide hills (Guinness on tap!).

Book a workshop here:

The darkroom is also available for hire, so if you are already experienced in B&W film processing and printing, but just need a darkroom and access to chemistry, please get in touch and book the darkroom for the day to fine-tune your AI (analogue intelligence).

A few snaps from today's Tintype workshop in Macclesfield - Asher & David both nailed their first plates and we had such fun. Exposure times varies from 6s to 1 minute at the end of the day - it was great to see these experienced photographers maximising the creative opportunity to explore movement during the super long exposures.

What fun we had with the wonderful Olivia and her dog Dingo - it was tricky for Dingo to keep still for the duration of the exposure, but we kinda knew that would happen :) Olivia wanted a Tintype for her birthday and we can't think of a better gift - a real moment in time captured using this timeless (and yet so vintage) hand-made process. Our first shot was a bit bright but the second shot (shown first here) is great - although Dingo was a bit tired of posing by then :)
