Presented as part of the South Australian Living Artist Festival, ‘Hungry Ghosts’ is a collaborative exhibition by Cindy Durant and Niccy Pallant, developed through a desert residency and six years of creative exchange.
The exhibition reflects on the precarious reality of sustaining a creative life. Drawing on the Buddhist idea of the “hungry ghost” — a being driven by unfulfilled longing — the works explore endurance, survival, labour, and the persistence required to continue making art.
Cindy and Niccy will gather in the desert for a concentrated residency focused on collaborative printmaking and experimentation. Working across lino, relief, screenprint, etching, and experimental processes including solar plate, collagraph and tetra pak printing, the exhibition embraces a bold and immediate visual language inspired by coastal and desert environments and modern mythologies.
As such, women artists stand at the centre of the works, working: grounded, assertive, and resilient within precarity.
The exhibition also includes an immersive tent-like installation, The Visionary, where visitors are invited to draw, make prints, select cards, and imagine possible futures through a series of prompts and encounters.
Hungry Ghosts is a meditation on creative survival, friendship, and the act of continuing despite uncertainty.
