I created a piece where a solitary basalt mesa rises from an ochre plain, its flat crown forming a dark silhouette against a pale sky. Riveted ridges and vertical fluting descend the slope like frozen rivers, while wind-sculpted sand gathers in smooth ribbons that trace the hill’s contours. Scattered stones and faint tire ruts add a human scale to a scene shaped by geology and time. The contrast between the mesa’s somber mass and the light, granular surface below gives the work a quiet, austere presence, and the spare composition leaves room to look.
