'Leaves: Eco-Anxiety'⁠

Amidst ecological polycrisis, what practical, cultural or mystical remedies are possible? ⁠
⁠
These works offer different ways into this question: A yarning circle creates space for conversations about Country, care and cultivating native species. Eucalyptus leaves frame and scent the gallery. A temple offers a place for quiet retreat and tea-drinking. Other works turn to ecological restoration, performance, ritual, magic and noise as ways of responding to environmental anxiety and grief.⁠
⁠
Living with ecological crises has become a part of everyday life. Climate change, habitat loss and environmental degradation bring with them anxiety and grief about what is happening to the natural world, and uncertainty about what comes next.⁠
⁠
'Leaves: Eco-Anxiety' brings together seven artists whose artworks respond to these feelings sympathetically and remedially. Across the exhibition, caring for Country and planting native habitat sit alongside contemplation, restoration, divination and drinking tea. Together, in different ways, they consider how we might care for the natural world while living with the knowledge of its increasing precarity.⁠

Meet Cringetrender, aka Bedlam Rigney (it/its), a bold and eclectic artist from the Western suburbs of Kaurna Yerta. With a background in a musical family, Bedlam's journey in music began early, writing its first song at eight. Despite struggles with mental health and homelessness, Bedlam found a creative haven within its q***r, disabled community. It’s a member of Lakinyeri with its family, contributing vocals and harmony. Determined to control its solo music, Bedlam has released impactful releases such as the album Take your Meds The Dream EP. "Cringetrender reclaims and redefines the term "transtrender," celebrating nonbinary identity and the power of being unapologetically authentic.⁠

ACE x Metro Arts Short-term Residency⁠: Tara Pattenden + Aly Bennett⁠

From Brisbane to Adelaide, the collaboration between Tara Pattenden and Aly Bennett continues.⁠ The pair first came together through Metro Arts’ Seedfund Residencies in April, developing an experimental collaboration across sound, installation, DIY technologies and immersive environments. Their week-long residency culminated in an Open Studio and improvised noise performance, transforming the gallery into something between an underground cave, an internet rabbit-hole and a live experimental instrument.⁠

Now, their collaboration continues at ACE as part of the ACE x Metro Arts Experimental Residency, with the artists exploring custom electronics, biometric sensors and sound-making textiles across Brisbane and Adelaide.⁠
⁠
As Tara reflected in her conversation with Metro Arts: “ACE does a lot of work with exhibitions that use all the senses, not just visual art. We will continue the conversation there, creating music performance with built synths.”⁠ And Aly added: “It will be great to have more together in a space and also flesh out all our ideas and test these at ACE.”⁠

Tara Pattenden is co-founder of Cyber Bunker, a space supporting women and non-binary people exploring and creating custom electronic music. Aly Bennett is a co-founder of Sharehouse, a concept store, artist-run initiative and community space in North Adelaide.⁠

The next stage of their collaboration will be shared at Open Studio Performance Night / Launch of Multichannel Commission, where Tara and Aly will open their shared studio before presenting a collaborative performance as part of an evening of experimental music, sonic textiles and expanded cinema.⁠

Join us for the opening celebration of the inaugural 2026 Multichannel Commission by CJ Taylor; alongside an open studio tour and collaborative performance by artists Aly Bennett (SA) and Tara Pattenden (QLD). ⁠

CJ’s new work, 'The Last Age of the Falling Grace', is a meditation on climate emergency refracted through the cyclical energies of humans and non-humans. Presented across three synchronised screens in ACE’s front window, the work will be on view 24 hours a day until until 5 December 2026. ⁠
⁠
Before the screening commences, Tara Pattenden and Aly Bennett will open their shared studio at the midway point of their ACE x Metro Arts Residency exploring custom electronics, biometric sensors and sound-making textiles together. Developed in partnership with Metro Arts, the 'ACE x Metro Arts Residency' takes place across Brisbane and Adelaide, with Aly travelling to Magandjin-Brisbane earlier this year to begin the collaboration, before Tara continues the project in Tarntanya-Adelaide throughout August.⁠

Emiko Artemis graduated with a PhD in 2012 from the University of Newcastle, NSW in 2024 and also hold a Master of Design and a Masters by Research. Their practice continues to arise from research in cultural, social and philosophical studies. They hold a university medal from the University of Newcastle and represented the university at Hatched , PICA, in 2023. ⁠
⁠
Emiko’s practice has been recognised through prizes, residencies and has appeared publications including CODE magazine and Open Doors Collective. They have been profiled by the Illawarra times and interviewed by Radio Adelaide, Regional Arts Australia, NAVA and Printmaking Australia about their practice and have participated in the national gatherings, Regional Arts Australia, Artlands, in 2023 and Access Arts Australia annual gathering, Meeting Place, in 2019 at the National Gallery of Australia, on Ngunnawal and Ngambri country⁠
⁠
Alongside their Visual arts practice, Emiko has also designed and facilitated successful community arts projects and has presented work in seminars and online platforms as well as in traditional exhibition format.⁠
⁠
Emiko has been funded through Country Arts SA for a residency at Oatlands, Tasmania 2023 and to present research and performance At the Performance of the Real conference in Dunedin New Zealand. Their performance practice has been recognized through invitations to present their performance work at both Burrinja Arts Centre and the experimental performance festival, HillScene LIVE in Melbourne in 2022 and 2024 and at Neoetric, an independent project led by Ray Harris, part of the Adelaide Festival in South Australia in 2024.⁠

Emiko lives with disability and works to end discrimination against people with disability and the Rainbow community, of which they are a part of. Emiko works from their home on Ramindjeri Country and their studio space at Adelaide Contemporary Experimental, on Kaurna Country, where they present experimental performance.⁠
